Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Ecclesiastes 4:1–6:12; 2 Corinthians 6:14–7:7; Psalm 47:1–9; Proverbs 22:16
Today we see the “teacher” Solomon lamenting about life. Perhaps he is a great teacher by showing us what not to do! His thoughts were worldly, and he sought the things of this world for joy and satisfaction—only to find none.
God granted him great wisdom, yet he chose to partner with unbelievers. He did this by taking hundreds of idolatrous women as wives, even after God warned him not to. He shifted his gaze away from God to pursue fleshly desires. His love and passion for his wives drove him to allow their wicked beliefs and traditions into his life and kingdom. Because he turned away from God, God turned away from him, and he was left wanting in his heart. Harmony cannot be found when we leave the presence of God. “How can light live with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14, NLT) It can’t!
Life without God is meaningless because He is the source of everything good; there is no true joy or satisfaction apart from Him. “You might live a thousand years twice over but still not find contentment.” (Ecclesiastes 6:6, NLT) No matter how long we live or how hard we try, we will never find true joy and contentment without Jesus.
We must “cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1, NLT)
Paul, on the other hand, was filled with joy and encouragement “when [Titus] told us how much you long to see me… how sorry you are for what happened, and how loyal you are to me.” (2 Corinthians 7:7, NLT) So too the Lord is filled with joy when we long to see Him, are sorry for our sins and repent, and remain loyal to Him. He will be with us, and we will taste His goodness. He will fill us with joy and satisfaction in a world that would otherwise leave us wanting. So, “Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise! For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is the great King of all the earth.” (Psalm 47:1–2, NLT) Fix your gaze on Him and see for yourselves today! Amen!
Action (5 minutes)
Make two quick lists: “The World” and “Christ.” Write one habit or relationship in each column where you gaze is fixed. Read 2 Corinthians 6:14–7:1 aloud, then ask the Spirit for one step to you can do to move your gaze from The World back to God. Write it down and do it today!
Short Prayer
Father, turn my eyes from the empty things things of this world. Cleanse my heart, make me holy, and help me focus my gaze back on You. Open my eyes to see your goodness in all things so I may have the joy that only comes from You and Your perspective, and let my life praise the King of all the earth. Amen.
