Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Song of Songs 1:1–4:16; 2 Corinthians 8:16–24; Psalm 50:1–23; Proverbs 22:22–23
The Song of Songs—a Hebrew superlative meaning the greatest of songs—is a breathtaking love story. Its passion, desire, and devotion stir the soul and, for me, point to my own love story with the Lord, my King.
Today I’m drawn to Song of Songs 1:7–8:
Young Woman: “Tell me, my love, where are you leading your flock today? Where will you rest your sheep at noon? …” (Song 1:7)
Young Man: “If you don’t know… follow the trail of my flock, and graze your young goats by the shepherds’ tents.” (Song 1:8)
Sometimes we feel like the King cannot be found. We ask, “Where are You leading me today? Where do I rest at noon?” His answer is tender and clear: follow the trail and stay by the tent (Song 1:8). What stirred in my heart while I pondered this is:
- The trail is His Word—the path that reveals Him and steadies our steps: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105; see also John 17:17; John 10:27)
- The tent is His New Covenant—the gift of atonement and adoption into His Kingdom, secured by His blood: “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.” (Luke 22:20; see Hebrews 9:12, 15; Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:15–17)
Even if we can’t see the King, and we don’t have a flock of believers to walk with, we are not orphaned. We can enter the tent alone and live in His Kingdom now—He has “delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13; cf. Luke 17:21; Ephesians 2:6). When we meet Him we may not be alone, but our courtship happens privately. It is personal, intimate and beautiful. We become His Bride because we love Him and yearn to be with Him— we believe in Him and enter into the New Covenant with Him.
In solitary seasons, when we feel lost and alone, we must hold fast to His Word and His covenant promise with us – His Bride: that He will return by His Holy Spirit then He will set the solitary in families and we will find our flock (Psalm 68:6). But fellowship or not, the Shepherd Himself is enough—the One who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11) and restores our soul (Psalm 23:1–3). He is the Good Shepherd, our Bridegroom, who will come back to the tent and collect His people.
So when you feel lost at “noon,” open the Word (the trail) and step by faith into the New Covenant promises (the tent). There you will find peace, love, joy, forgiveness, belonging, and rest—as His Bride, greatly desired, welcomed, and loved.
Action (5 minutes)
- Declare aloud (slowly):
“My Lover is mine, and I am His” (Song of Songs 2:16).
“He will never leave me abandoned or forsaken” (Hebrews 13:5).
“I trust in Your Word and Your promises” (Psalm 119:42; 2 Corinthians 1:20).
“So I will feed on Your Word and stay by Your tent until You return” (Matthew 4:4; Psalm 27:5; Luke 22:20). - Journal one line: Where did I sense Your belonging, covering, or rest today?
Short Prayer
Jesus, my Bridegroom, I am Yours and You are mine. Seal this truth on my heart (Song of Songs 8:6). Keep me near Your Word—the trail—and within Your New Covenant—the tent—where I am atoned, adopted, and at rest. Hold me close whether I’m with a flock or walking with You alone, until the day You return. Amen.
