“Meanwhile, the Lord said to me, ‘Put a watchman on the city wall. Let him shout out what he sees. He should look for chariots drawn by pairs of horses, and for riders on donkeys and camels. Let the watchman be fully alert.’” — Isaiah 21:6–7, NLT
Watchman on the Wall
God calls His people to be watchmen—posted on the wall to see and shout what is coming. But what are we to watch for? Isaiah’s vision lists chariots, horses, donkeys, and camels—all of which, in Scripture, carry beautiful symbolism from God:
- Chariots → God’s heavenly armies (2 Kings 6:17).
- Horses → Strength and victory (Proverbs 21:31).
- Donkeys → Humility and peace, seen in Jesus’ triumphal entry (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:5).
- Camels → Provision and abundance (Genesis 24:10–11; Isaiah 60:6).
But as watchmen, we must also be alert to the enemy’s counterfeits. Satan loves to copy God’s symbols and twist them for destruction and his followers (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). Every positive has a negative.
- Chariots of the enemy → symbols of worldly power and military intimidation (Exodus 14:7–9; Psalm 20:7).
- Horses of darkness → riders of conquest, war, famine, and death (Revelation 6:2–8).
- Donkeys twisted → false messiahs or deceivers imitating humility to gain followers (Matthew 24:5).
- Camels corrupted → the lure of wealth, pride, and luxury that dulls our guard (Matthew 19:24; Isaiah 21:5).
The watchman’s job is not to assume everything that looks good is good, but to discern: Is this of God, or is it a counterfeit? That’s why Isaiah warns, “Let the watchman be fully alert” (Isaiah 21:7, NLT).
The feast may be laid out and the rugs spread in comfort, but the enemy attacks when we least expect it—“Look! They are preparing a great feast. They are spreading rugs for people to sit on. Everyone is eating and drinking. But quick! Grab your shields and prepare for battle. You are being attacked!” (Isaiah 21:5, NLT).
Action (5 Minutes with God)
- Ask the Lord: “Where am I too quick to assume something is good without testing it?”
- Read 1 John 4:1 aloud: “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God.”
- Write down one “chariot, horse, donkey, or camel” in your life—a power, voice, teaching, or opportunity—and pray: “Lord, show me if this is You or a counterfeit.”
- Take one minute to be quiet and listen. Write what He whispers to you in your mind.
Short Prayer
Lord, make me a faithful watchman. Help me celebrate Your true provision, strength, humility, and blessing, but also guard me from the enemy’s counterfeits. Open my eyes to discern the difference so that I may shout the warning and keep my heart faithful to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 💎
