Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Isaiah 62:6-65:25, Philippians 2:19-3:4, Psalm 73:1-28, Proverbs 24:13-14
When Wicked Prosper
“Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure. But as for me, I almost lost my footing. My feet were slipping, and I was almost gone. For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.” (Psalm 73:1–3, NLT)
Have you ever looked at the lives of the wicked and wondered why they seem to flourish? Why they escape consequences while you, striving to live uprightly, wrestle with heartache and trouble? The psalmist Asaph felt this sting deeply: “Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason?” (Psalm 73:13, NLT).
But the turning point comes when he brings his questions to God: “Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.” (Psalm 73:17, NLT). Suddenly, perspective shifts. The prosperity of the wicked is temporary; their destruction is certain. Meanwhile, the pure in heart are anchored in God’s presence and promises.
Isaiah echoes the same truth with God’s own voice: “I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’ to a nation that did not call on my name. All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people. But they follow their own evil paths and their own crooked schemes” (Isaiah 65:1–2, NLT). The Lord describes their rebellion as a stench in His nostrils — a people who provoke Him to His face. “I will repay them in full!” He declares (Isaiah 65:6–7).
Yet, for those who love Him and walk with purity of heart, the promises are beautiful: “My servants will eat, but you will starve. My servants will drink, but you will be thirsty. My servants will rejoice, but you will be sad and ashamed. My servants will sing for joy, but you will cry in sorrow and despair.” (Isaiah 65:13–14, NLT).
What comfort for the faithful! Even when our hearts ache and we feel life’s burdens, we are never abandoned. Asaph concludes his psalm with words that echo into eternity:
“Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever. … But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.” (Psalm 73:23–28, NLT)
When the world feels unjust, when we see the wicked prosper while we struggle, let us remember the sanctuary perspective: their prosperity is fleeting, but God’s promises are eternal. We are never forsaken. He holds our hand, strengthens our heart, and leads us to a glorious destiny. And when we go to Him, He will answer, give comfort, perspective, and understanding. That is our unshakable hope.

Prayer
Lord, forgive me when I envy the prosperity of the wicked or question the value of walking with You. Remind me that You are my portion and my strength forever. Thank You for Your promises to those who love You and keep their hearts pure. Help me to find my comfort, my perspective, and my joy in Your presence. I declare with Asaph: how good it is to be near You, my Sovereign Lord. Amen. 💎
