When Thieves Creep In – Jesus Brings Peace and Protection
Jeremiah paints a haunting picture: “Death has climbed in through our windows and has entered our mansions. It has killed off the flower of our youth; children no longer play in the streets and young men no longer gather in the squares” (Jeremiah 9:21, NLT).
The enemy comes like a thief—sneaking through broken windows, slipping into places we thought were secure. He robs us of joy, identity, and purpose. He kills off “the flower of youth,” leaving us feeling old, unworthy, or useless. Sometimes this is literal in the young, but often it’s spiritual—young believers, or those young in their understanding of God, cut down before they can bloom. And many seasoned believers still do not know their true identity or calling because lies, manipulation, and assaults have stolen it away.
God’s warning is clear: when windows are left open, the thief will enter. That’s why we must guard our hearts, repair broken places quickly, and ask the Lord daily: “Who do You say I am?” and “What do You want me to know and do?” When we hear His voice and obey, we walk in His strength and fulfill the purpose for which we were created.
But Jeremiah’s rebuke doesn’t stop with the obvious enemy—it reaches into the house of God itself: “From the least to the greatest, their lives are ruled by greed. From prophets to priests, they are all frauds. They offer superficial treatments for my people’s mortal wound. They give assurances of peace when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:13-14; cf. 8:11-12, NLT).
What a sobering reality! Sometimes the thief climbs through the window with the priest or prophet walking right beside him. Leaders twist God’s Word with lies or half-truths, offering man’s answers where only God’s truth will heal. They soothe with shallow words while the house is ransacked, telling people “all is well” while the foundation crumbles. We think we are safe in our mansions of belief and doctrine, but if the Truth Himself is still locked out, the walls will not stand.
The Lord pleads: “When I called, they did not answer; when I spoke, they did not listen. They deliberately did evil before My eyes and chose what I despise” (Jeremiah 66:4, NLT). He mourns over rebellion, but He will act. He is not mocked, and His house will not remain defiled forever.
So the question comes to each of us: Who are we letting in? The thief and the fraud, or the King Himself? Jesus says, “Here I am” (Isaiah 65:1). He stands knocking, waiting to be invited into His own house, our very hearts. If we will let Him in, He will restore, protect, heal, and establish us. He will teach us our true identity and calling. He will fill the house with His peace and presence.
Do not settle for superficial treatments when the Great Physician is at the door. Do not be content with false assurances when the Prince of Peace Himself is waiting to speak life over you. Open the door to Him. Let Him in.
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take five quiet minutes today and ask the Lord to walk through the “house” of your heart with you. Picture Him going from room to room, window to window. Are there broken places where the enemy slips in? Are there voices—teachers, influencers, even friends—you’ve let in that don’t truly reflect Him? Ask Him to point them out. Then, open the door wide to Jesus. Invite Him to take His rightful place as Lord over every corner of your life.
Prayer
Father, I come before You humbled by Your Word. Forgive me for the times I have left windows open or allowed false voices to speak into my life. Forgive me for locking You out of rooms that rightfully belong to You. Lord Jesus, I open the door to You now—come in, take Your place, and dwell in me fully. Close every window to the enemy. Remove the lies and fill my house with Your peace, truth, and presence. Holy Spirit, refine me and guide me, that my life would honor You in all things. Make me a child who brings You joy and delight. Amen.
