The Treasure Chest of Kingdom Habits
“So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.”
—1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NLT)
Paul is showing us in 1 Thessalonians 5 how to be prepared for the return of the King. It’s the practical explanation of what Jesus implied in the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1–13)—to stay awake, to be ready, to keep our lamps filled with oil. Paul takes that parable and unfolds it into clear instructions on what readiness looks like in daily life.
1 Thessalonians 5 is a goldmine of Kingdom nuggets—practical truths that shape how we live as children of the light. Paul isn’t giving us lofty theory; he’s handing us Kingdom Habits—daily rhythms that prepare us for the Lord’s return. And each one of these habits is truly a Gem of Knowledge—wisdom from God’s heart, meant to be treasured, polished, and lived out in our everyday walk with Him.
Kingdom Habits (Gems of Knowledge)
- Stay awake spiritually – Don’t drift into complacency (v. 6).

- Encourage the timid – Speak courage to the fearful (v. 14).
- Care for the weak – Gently lift those who stumble (v. 14).
- Be patient with everyone – Not just with some, but with all (v. 14).
- Always do good – Seek the good of others, not just yourself (v. 15).
- Be joyful always – Joy is a posture of trust (v. 16).
- Pray without ceasing – Keep constant communion with God (v. 17).
- Give thanks in all circumstances – Gratitude is God’s will for you (v. 18).
- Don’t stifle the Spirit – Make room for His move (v. 19).
- Don’t scoff at prophecies – Take God’s word seriously (v. 20).
- Test everything – Hold fast to the good, reject the evil (v. 21–22).
