His Righteousness and Ours

“Righteousness goes as a herald before Him, preparing the way for His steps.” —Psalm 85:13 (NLT)

Have you ever wondered what makes a heart ready for Jesus? Psalm 85:13 gives us a glimpse: “Righteousness goes before Him…” But what does that mean?

From the very beginning, God laid down what is right and holy. He taught Adam and Eve boundaries, sacrifice, justice, and truth. Even after their fall, God didn’t abandon His people—He kept revealing Himself, guiding, and preparing a path for redemption. Every law, every act of mercy, every prophecy was a step toward Jesus.

And then Jesus came—the Righteous One, fulfilling all truth, walking in perfect love, and giving His life so we could be made right with God. His righteousness opened the way for the Holy Spirit to dwell in us and transform us.

Now, the preparation continues through us. We carry the light of His truth like lamps filled with oil—lit by intimacy, fueled by surrender. Step by step, conviction by conviction, we are refined and made ready, becoming a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.

Just as Jesus’ first coming was prepared by righteousness, so is His return.

Action (5 Minutes with God)

  1. Take 5 minutes to commune with the Lord. Ask Him, “Is my life preparing the way for You, Lord?”
    • Journal what He whispers.
  2. Then ask Him, “What do you want me to know about that?”
    • Journal what He whispers.
  3. Then ask, “What do you want. me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers then do it!

Prayer

Lord, thank You for preparing the way through Jesus. Fill me with Your righteousness and teach me to walk in truth, love, and obedience. Let my life be a lamp that shines for others to see You. I want to be ready—and I want to help others be ready too. In Jesus’ name, amen.
