Hearing God’s Voice: Insights from Scripture

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 44:24-47:7, 2 Timothy 2:22-3:17, Psalm 94:1-23, Proverbs 26:6-8

God Speaks, Will You Listen?

Have you ever wondered if God still speaks today? If so, let me assure you: He does—and always has.

In Jeremiah 44–47, God gave ten different messages through the prophet Jeremiah. Ten. Each one was tailored for a specific group of people, revealing that God isn’t vague or distant. He is personal, precise, and purposeful. He has things to say to nations, to families, and to individuals—yes, even to you.

Paul understood this firsthand. He wasn’t taught by men. Galatians 1:12 tells us, “I received my message from no human source, and no one taught me. Instead, I received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ.” Jesus was his Teacher. The Holy Spirit was his Instructor. And that same Spirit has been given to us—to lead us into all truth (John 16:13).

But here’s where many miss it: They don’t recognize the Bible and the Holy Spirit as their two greatest sources of divine communication. They run to the internet, self-help books, or even their own gut feelings—forgetting that God has already spoken and continues to speak through His Word and His Spirit.

Paul reminds Timothy—and us—in 2 Timothy 3:15–17 (NLT):
“You have been taught the Holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”

That’s not old news—that’s good news. Scripture isn’t outdated; it’s alive and active. The Spirit and the Word work together. The Spirit gives revelation. The Word confirms and corrects.

Psalm 94:11–13 says, “The Lord knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless! Joyful are those you discipline, Lord, those you teach with your instructions. You give them relief from troubled times…”

In other words, our thoughts—no matter how clever or intuitive—are worthless without Him. But His thoughts, His instruction, bring joy, discipline, relief, and peace.

Here’s the warning: if we lean on our own understanding, or worse—follow the teachings of men who have no Spirit, we’re walking blindly. Proverbs 26:6 paints a brutal picture: “Trusting a fool to convey a message is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison.” Yikes. That’s what happens when we trust human wisdom over divine truth.

So pause today. Ask yourself:
📍 Am I listening for His voice?
📍 Do I allow His Word to correct me?
📍 Have I invited the Holy Spirit to teach and lead me—daily?

He is speaking. The only question is—are you listening? 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes today to ask the Holy Spirit to teach you as you read the Word.
Open your Bible to 2 Timothy 3:15–17 and slowly read it aloud. Then ask:

  • “Lord, what do you want me to know about this today?”
    • Journal what the Holy Spirit whispers.
  • Then ask, “What do you want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers then do it!

Write down what He reveals. He speaks immediately, so write the first thing that comes to your mind. Don’t question, just write. Let Him speak. Then, when you go back and read it you will see it was the Lord.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are a God who still speaks. Thank You for giving us Your Son and through Him, Your Word and Your Spirit to guide me in truth. Forgive me for the times I’ve leaned on my own understanding or followed the wisdom of man instead of listening to You. Today, I invite the Holy Spirit to be my Teacher.
Correct me, train me, and lead me in the way I should go. Let my heart delight in Your instruction and find peace in Your discipline. Your ways are better than mine, and Your thoughts higher. I want to walk in truth and experience the relief, joy, and clarity that only come from You.
In Jesus’ precious name I pray,
Amen.
