Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Lamentations 1:1-2:22, Philemon 1:1-25, Psalm 101:1-8, Proverbs 26:20
True Identity in Christ
Scripture: “Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me.” — Philemon 1:11 (NLT)
What a beautiful Gospel picture hides in Paul’s short letter to Philemon! Onesimus, a runaway slave who had failed his master, encounters Jesus and is radically changed. Once considered useless, he becomes a faithful helper in Paul’s ministry—a walking testimony of grace.
Ironically, his name—Onesimus—means “useful.” He was living in direct contradiction to the identity he was born with… until Christ stepped in. That’s what grace does—it restores not only our value but our God-given identity.
Paul doesn’t just ask Philemon to take Onesimus back—he asks him to receive him as a brother, not a servant. That’s the supernatural power of reconciliation in Christ. Jesus doesn’t just forgive us—He elevates us, restores us, and sends us back with a new identity and purpose.
Paul even says, “If he owes you anything, charge it to my account.” That’s the heart of Jesus right there! He steps in for us, pays our debt, and restores our standing.
How many of us have run away from God or failed someone in our lives—only to discover that in Christ, our past doesn’t disqualify us? It’s actually the place where grace does its deepest work. Like Onesimus, you may have been written off, but in the hands of God, you are called useful and beloved. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes with God today to ponder these questions with Him:
- Is there someone I need to forgive, receive back, or restore?
- Is there someone I should advocate for, like Paul did for Onesimus?
- Is there a place in my past where I’ve called myself “useless” that God wants to redeem?
Then ask Him:
- “What do you want me to know about this?”
- Journal what He whispers to you through the Holy Spirit.
- then ask, “What do you want me to do?”
- Journal what He whispers then do it!
God sees beyond what we can grasp and understands—so trust Him to reveal what you cannot see. Let the Holy Spirit transform your thinking and renew your identity to produce something beautiful.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing me not as I was, but as You’ve redeemed me to be. I release every label of failure, every runaway place in my past, and I receive Your grace. Help me extend that same grace to others. Use me to heal, restore, and reconcile in Your name. Amen.
