Dressed in Grace, Chasing Other Lovers | A Devotional on Ezekiel 16

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Ezekiel 14:12-16:41, Hebrews 7:18-28, Psalm 106:1-12, Proverbs 27:4-6

Stop Walking Away

“And when I passed by again, I saw that you were old enough for love. So I wrapped my cloak around you to cover your nakedness and declared my marriage vows. I made a covenant with you, says the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.” -Ezekiel 16:8

Ezekiel 16 reads like a heart-wrenching diary entry from a loving husband whose wife has betrayed him in the worst way imaginable.

God begins by describing how He found Israel abandoned, filthy, and helpless—like an unwanted baby tossed out and left to die. But He didn’t walk away. He stopped. He rescued. He cleaned her up, nurtured her, raised her, clothed her, and crowned her in beauty. She had nothing—but He gave her everything.

And what did she do?

She used the very gifts He gave her—her beauty, her clothes, her position—to seduce other lovers.
She ran after idols. She prostituted herself spiritually, even paying others to use her.
She took her blessings and gave them to gods of silver and gold, wood and stone.

It’s not just their story—it’s ours too, if we’re honest.

Today, many of us do the same. We take the grace of God and run straight into the arms of pride, comfort, control, addiction, entertainment, popularity, or religion.
We decorate the altars of our hearts with God’s gifts, then bow to idols He never gave us.

Ezekiel 16 isn’t just about ancient Israel.
It’s about us.
It’s about how easy it is to forget where we came from.
To forget Who lifted us out of the pit.
To dress ourselves in God’s righteousness and still go chasing lovers who can never love us back.

But here’s the part that gets me:

“Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.” (Ezekiel 16:60)

Even after betrayal, God offers restoration.
He is the only One who stays faithful even when we’ve been unfaithful.
Will we love Him with the faithfulness He deserves, or keep giving our hearts to things that can never love us back? 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

🔥 Examine your heart today.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if you’ve taken the very grace God has given you—your position, blessings, influence—and used it to chase after things that break His heart. Write down anything the Lord brings to your mind. Confess it. Repent. Pluck it out. Then, ask the Lord:

  • What do you want me to know about that?”
    • Journal what He whispers through the Holy Spirit
  • Then ask, “What do you want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers then do it!

Let this be a day where you stop walking away and return fully to your Bridegroom—faithful, pure, and wholly His.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for forgetting where You found me. You covered me with grace and clothed me in righteousness, but I confess—I’ve often taken those gifts and run after other things. Reveal every idol. Burn away every false love. Bring me back into covenant faithfulness with You. I don’t want to wear Your robes while chasing other thrones. You are the only One worthy of my love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
