Entertaining Angels & Embracing the Call: Hebrews 13 Devotional

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Ezekiel 33:1-34:31, Hebrews 13:1-25, Psalm 115:1-18, Proverbs 27:21-22

Watchmen, Shepherds… and Angels

“Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.”
—Hebrews 13:15–16 (NLT)

In Ezekiel 33, God paints a vivid picture of the watchman—one who stands on the wall, alert and attentive, sounding the alarm when danger is near. A faithful watchman isn’t passive; he watches, warns, and takes responsibility. Later, in Ezekiel 34, God turns His eyes to the shepherds—those called to care for His people, feed them, bind up the broken, and lead them well. The rebuke is sharp for those who neglected this call.

Fast-forward to Hebrews 13, and we hear the same heart echoed through Paul:
“Keep on loving each other.”
“Show hospitality to strangers.”
“Remember those in prison.”
“Honor your marriage.”
“Don’t love money.”
“Remember your leaders.”
“Do good.”
“Share.”
“Praise.”
This is the holy work of watchmen and shepherds.

One line leaps out like a divine whisper:
“Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it” (Hebrews 13:2).

Let that sink in: Sometimes, in doing good to others, you’re unknowingly hosting angels.
That smile… that meal… that moment of listening… may be more heavenly than you know. Kingdom work isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like folded laundry, a warm meal, or an open chair.

We were never meant to live self-focused or spiritually isolated. As God’s people, we are His watchmen—warning with love, interceding in prayer, sounding the alarm when deception creeps in. We are also His shepherds—tending to the hurting, comforting the lonely, and guiding others gently back to His heart.

And we do it all with praise on our lips.

“Let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise.”
When the weight is heavy… we praise.
When we’re weary from watching… we praise.
When we don’t see fruit yet… we praise.
Because our allegiance is to His name—not to outcome, not to applause.

It’s easy to forget the power of small obedience, but heaven doesn’t overlook it.
So whether you’re watching the walls, carrying a broken sheep, or simply making dinner for a friend—you’re serving the King.

Keep praising. Keep loving.
Keep watching. Keep tending.
And don’t be surprised if you entertain an angel along the way. 💎

    • Journal what He whispers through the Holy Spirit.
  • Then asl, “What do you want me to do?”
    • Write down what He whispers to you – then do it!

Let today be a day of Kingdom focus, work, and glory as God speaks truth into you about this. 😍

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to see people the way You do. Soften my heart to love beyond comfort and convenience. Help me to be hospitable with joy and generosity, and to welcome others as if I were welcoming You. Teach me to live alert—watchful for divine moments and mindful of hidden needs. May I never miss the opportunity to love an angel unaware. In Jesus’ name, amen.
