Tending Our Flock

“Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds, for riches don’t last forever, and the crown might not be passed to the next generation. After the hay is harvested and the new crop appears and the mountain grasses are gathered in, your sheep will provide wool for clothing, and your goats will provide the price of a field. And you will have enough goats’ milk for yourself, your family, and your servant girls.” -Proverbs 27:23-27 (NLT)

There is a reason the Lord compares people to sheep so often in Scripture. Sheep require care, intentional oversight, patient correction, and protection from harm. So do our children and grandchildren—and the generations that follow after us.

Proverbs 27 reminds us to “know the state of your flocks.” That means more than just being aware of their existence—it’s about understanding their spiritual condition. Are they being fed truth? Are they clothed in righteousness? Are they protected from the predators of this world?

The greatest inheritance you can leave your children is not land or money—it’s truth. In the Old Testament, God commanded His people again and again to “teach these things to your children.” Why? So they wouldn’t forget. So they would know His ways, walk in them, and pass them on. (See Deuteronomy 6:6–7, Psalm 78:4–7)

But this call isn’t just for biological parents or grandparents—it’s for anyone who follows Jesus. If you don’t have children of your own, there are still young people around you who need guidance. Be a spiritual shepherd. Teach, model, and mentor with intentionality. The crown of wisdom and faith won’t pass to the next generation automatically—it must be handed off purposefully.

God’s economy is different than ours. He says the real wealth lies in the “goat’s milk” that sustains your household—the spiritual legacy that nourishes and blesses your home and community for years to come. That only comes from tending the flock with diligence.

The next generation is watching. Let them see faith in action. Let them hear truth spoken in love. Let them receive wisdom that’s been lived out. And when the time comes, let them inherit not just what’s in your hand, but what’s been sown in their hearts. 💎

• “Lord, what do You want me to know about this?”
  • Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit.
• Then ask, “What do You want me to know?”
  • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Prayer

Lord, awaken me to the responsibility of spiritual legacy. Help me tend to the hearts of the next generation—my children, grandchildren, or those You’ve placed in my life. Give me wisdom to lead them, patience to teach them, and boldness to speak Your truth in love. May Your truth not be lost in my line. In Jesus’ name, amen.
