Jesus Is Our Escape: Learning from the Writing on the Wall :A Daniel 5 Devotional

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Daniel 5:1-31, 2 Peter2:1-22, Psalm 119:113-128, Proverbs 28:19-20

Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin

Throughout history, God has proven that He is both merciful and just. In Daniel 5, King Belshazzar foolishly rejected the Lord and chose pride instead of humility. He defiled the holy things of God and praised idols of gold, silver, and stone. In response, a divine hand appeared and wrote a message of judgment on the wall.

Daniel boldly told Belshazzar that even the most powerful king—his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar—was stripped of everything until he humbled himself and acknowledged that “the Most High God rules.” But Belshazzar refused to learn from this truth and instead chose pride and defiance. That very night, he was judged.

Just like him, we too will be weighed in the balance. Will we be found wanting? Will our days be numbered and our lives divided from the blessings of God? Or will we be found faithful—rescued by Jesus, filled with His Spirit, and secured in covenant with Him?

Jesus is our escape. He’s our refuge and our shield. He not only saves us from destruction, He fills us with insight, wisdom, and divine understanding—just like Daniel. When we’re His, we don’t have to fear the writing on the wall. We know the Author.

Peter wrote,
“And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ… and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before” (2 Peter 2:20, NLT).
This isn’t just a warning—it’s a call to abide in Jesus, not just visit Him occasionally. He is the way of escape, the door of freedom, and the path to life.

Psalm 119:114 echoes this promise:
“You are my refuge and my shield; Your word is my source of hope.”
Jesus doesn’t just offer escape—He offers transformation. In Him, we are given a new mind, a new spirit, and exceptional spiritual gifts like wisdom, insight, and divine understanding (Daniel 5:11–12, 14).

This world is full of defiance like Belshazzar’s. But we, like Daniel, are called to be set apart—to shine with the Spirit of the living God. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes with God today. Ask Him:

  • What do You want me to know about this?”
    • Journal what He whispe4rs through the Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do you want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Allow Him to show you His heart on this so you may grow closer to Him.

Prayer

Lord, I don’t want to be found lacking. Search my heart and weigh me by Your truth. Rescue me from the wickedness of this world and anchor me in Your Word. Be my refuge, my escape, and my source of life. Fill me with wisdom and understanding as I follow You. Amen.
