Bread from Bethlehem: Our Bread of Life, Our Joy

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Micah 5:1-7:20, Revelation 7:1-17, Psalm 135, 1-21, Proverbs 30:5-6

Eat and Be Filled

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf.” – Micah 5:2 (NLT)

In Micah 5, the Lord foretells the coming of the Messiah, and He begins in an unexpected place—Bethlehem. A small, insignificant village. Yet from here would come the Ruler of Israel, whose origins are from eternity.

Bethlehem means House of Bread. Jesus later confirms this when He says, “I am the Bread of Life” (John 6:35). He is the One who satisfies every hunger and quenches every thirst. Ephrathah, the ancient name, means fruitful. How fitting. The Messiah born here is abundant in mercy, grace, and love—fruitful in good works—and He never leaves His people lacking (Revelation 7:16–17).

A God this good, “Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant… because you delight in showing unfailing love?” (Micah 7:18)

There is none like Him! So what could we possibly bring a God like this in return?
Offerings? Sacrifices?
Yearling calves, thousands of rams, rivers of oil—even our firstborn? (Micah 6:6–7)

No.

The Lord answers simply:

“This is what the LORD requires of you:
to do what is right,
to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.”
 (Micah 6:8)

That’s it.

He doesn’t want payment.
He doesn’t want sacrifices on an alter.
He wants our heart.

When we walk humbly with Him—loving His mercy and choosing what is right—everything changes. We are nourished. We are transformed. And His Kingdom advances through lives that are quietly yielded and deeply satisfied in Him. This is joy – joy in the Lord! Hallelujah! 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take five minutes with the Lord today and ask:

  • Lord, what do You want to tell me specifically about this today?”
    • Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Let today be a day of partaking of the Lord’s goodness – that you may be filled with His joy.

Prayer

Jesus, Bread of Life, thank You for satisfying my deepest hunger. I offer You my heart—nothing more and nothing less. Teach me to love mercy, do what is right, and walk humbly with You. May my life be fruitful for Your Kingdom. Amen.
