Why Do We Celebrate? | A Christmas Eve Devotional

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Zechariah 6:1-7:14, Revelation 15:1-8, Psalm 143:1-12, Proverbs 30:24-28

Pure Heart, Pure Motives

“Was it really for me that you were fasting?” – Zechariah 7:5 (NLT)

Here we are on Christmas Eve, and this verse meets us with a holy pause. God asks a simple but searching question: Why are you doing what you’re doing? Even in religious acts, even in holy festivals, He looks past the activity and straight into the heart.

Why do we celebrate?
Why do we decorate the tree, buy the gifts, sing the songs, attend church, or serve the needy?
Is it truly for Him—or have we slowly made it about ourselves?

God has never been impressed by ritual alone. He has always desired hearts that seek Him, remember Him, and love Him—not just once a year, but every day. Christmas is not about tradition for tradition’s sake; it is about remembrance, reverence, and worship.

Scripture reminds us who He truly is:

“Great and marvelous are your works,
O Lord God, the Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
O King of the nations…
For you alone are holy.”
 (Revelation 15:3–4)

He has revealed Himself as the One True God, our Messiah, our King. And He is still revealing Himself—daily—to those who will seek Him. Christmas is not merely about what we do for God, but about remembering what He has done for us.

So today, let us take David’s posture of heart:

“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning,
for I am trusting you…
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.”
 (Psalm 143:8–10)

This Christmas Eve, may we come before Him honestly—asking Him to purify our motives, align our hearts, and draw us deeper into genuine worship. May we seek Him not just in a season, but in surrender. And may everything we do—today and always—be for the glory of His name. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take five minutes with God today and ask Him:

  • Lord, what do You want me personally to know about this today?
    • Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Let today be a day of remembering and celebrating with the Lord.

Prayer

Lord, search my heart and purify my motives. I don’t want empty traditions—I want You. Help me to remember who You are and what You have done, not just at Christmas, but all year long. Let my worship be sincere, my obedience faithful, and my life bring glory to Your name. Amen.
