God’s Commands Are Love: Understanding His Heart in Exodus

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Exodus 21″22-23:13, Matthew 24:1-28, Psalm 29:1-11, Proverbs 7:6-23

Love in Action

When many people read the laws in Exodus, they see rules, regulations, and restrictions. At first glance, these chapters can feel overwhelming, as if God is giving endless instructions. But when we slow down and listen with spiritual ears, something beautiful appears. These laws are not harsh. They are protective. They are thoughtful and deeply relational. They reveal God’s heart and His desire to teach His people how to live like Him.

In Exodus 20, God gave the Ten Commandments as a blueprint for relationship. The first four commandments teach us how to love God with loyalty, reverence, and devotion. The fifth teaches us how to honor God’s divine order through family. The final five teach us how to love others with integrity, faithfulness, and respect.

Then, in Exodus 21–23, God gives civil laws that show what those commandments look like in daily life. These laws are not random. They are not separate or disconnected. Every one of them supports and reflects the Ten Commandments. They are love in action.

Over and over, we see God protecting the vulnerable—women, children, servants, the poor, foreigners, widows, orphans, and the injured. That is not accidental. It reveals His heart. In Egypt, Israel had been abused and oppressed. Now God was saying, “In My house, that ends. My Kingdom does not exploit the weak. It covers them.”

When God speaks about protecting life, He is teaching, “Do not murder.”
When He commands restitution for theft, He is teaching, “Do not steal.”
When He protects marriage and family, He is teaching, “Do not commit adultery.”
When He insists on honesty in courts, He is teaching, “Do not bear false witness.”
When He defends the poor and the foreigner, He is teaching compassion.

Later, Jesus summed up everything God had been teaching from the beginning. He showed that the law was never about rules alone—it was always about wholehearted love for God and sincere love for people. He revealed that obedience flows from relationship, and righteousness grows out of intimacy.

God was building more than a nation. He was building a culture shaped by His character. After delivering Israel from Egypt’s cruelty, He was teaching them how to live differently—how to walk in justice, mercy, and responsibility. Freedom was not just about leaving bondage. It was about learning to live in love.

Exodus shows us that God cares deeply about how we worship Him and how we treat people. Our faith is not meant to stay in church buildings or quiet prayer moments alone. It is meant to shape our conversations, our choices, our finances, our relationships, and our character.

God’s law has always been about love—love for Him and love for others. When we walk in that love, we reflect His Kingdom on earth.

God did not give these commands to restrict His people. He gave them to bless them. He was showing them how to live in peace, freedom, security, and wholeness. His laws were designed to protect their hearts, their homes, and their future. And He wants that for us too. God’s desire has always been that His children would walk in love, wisdom, and abundance—close to Him and secure in His care.

When you begin to know God’s heart, everything changes—how you see Him, how you see yourself, and how you see the world around you. His laws no longer look like cold rules, but loving instruction. Obedience no longer feels like pressure, but protection. Worship becomes relationship. Faith becomes trust. And life becomes a journey of walking closely with a Father who deeply loves His children.

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes today to go deeper with the Lord. There is always more when we seek Him. Ask Him:

  • What do You want me to know about this today, Lord?
    • Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?
    • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Let Him breathe His love in to you and reveal new ways of love inside of you.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for revealing Your heart through Your Word. Thank You that Your commands are not burdens, but invitations to live in love and freedom. Teach me how to love You with my whole heart and love others as You have loved me. Shape my character, guide my choices, and help me reflect Your goodness every day. Help me to love better through You. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.
