Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Leviticus 24:1-25:46, Mark 10:13-31, Psalm 44:9-26, Proverbs 10:20-21
God is at the Center
When we read about the man who blasphemed in Leviticus 24, we may be left wondering, “Why?” Why would God do such a thing? Let’s dig a little deeper to find the gems.
Before the dispute, before the blasphemy, before the judgment—there was light.
The first verses of Leviticus 24 show us inside the Holy Place, where the lampstand burned continually. It was never allowed to go out. Its steady flame testified that God’s presence was not temporary. He dwelled among His people.
Across from it stood twelve loaves of bread—the Bread of the Presence—representing the twelve tribes of Israel. They stayed continually before the LORD. So this showed that the people were continually in the presence of God.
So we see:
- Light and representation.
- Presence and covenant.
God was not distant—He was dwelling among them at the center of their camp. He ordered the camp around Himself—not to control them, but to dwell at the very heart of the people, the center.
Then we see that, in the middle of that very camp, a quarrel broke out. And in the heat of the dispute, a man blasphemed the Name. Wait…in the middle? This means that a quarrel broke out near where the Tabernacle was, where God’s presence was.
This is striking:
Inside the sanctuary, the Name was honored → Outside, in the camp, the Name was cursed.
This was not careless speech. In Israel, the Name represented authority, character, and covenant presence. God revealed His covenant Name to them—YHWH. To curse the Name was to reject the very One who lived at the center of their community.
But notice something important—the people did not react impulsively. They brought the man to Moses. They placed him in custody. Then they waited. Moses took it to God and waited for an answer. Judgment belongs only to the LORD.
That alone reveals love. This was not mob justice. This was measured. This was careful.
God Himself declared the consequence. The act was treated with weight because the covenant was weighty. God’s people were His priority, His love. He had to do what was right to protect His people because He loved them. He knew that this kind of defiance and rejection of Him would spread through the hearts of the people and that He would lose many more. Corruption and sin spread; like leaven, they will spread through the whole batch of dough.
And yet, even here, we see something deeper. The man was taken outside the camp—outside the ordered space arranged around God’s dwelling.
Centuries later, another man would be accused of blasphemy.
Jesus.
He too would be taken outside the city. But this time, the One outside was innocent. The Son who perfectly honored the Father bore the consequence associated with covenant violation.
The holiness of the Name did not disappear; it was secured for the people as He finished the work on the cross, and mercy entered the story.
The lamp still burns—He gave us His Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts and illuminate us.
The Bread still stands before the Father—we are given right standing before the Father through Jesus.
Now, under grace, we get to approach through Christ.
When Jesus taught us to pray, “Hallowed be Your Name,” He was not introducing a new idea. He was revealing the heart behind Leviticus 24.
May His Name be treated as holy.
May our lives reflect reverence.
May we not live in outward defiance while claiming inward covenant.
Here is the love in it all:
God did not demand holiness from a distance; He moved into the camp. He arranged their lives around His presence. He warned them because He loved them. He took action to protect them. And then He sent His Son so that holiness and mercy could meet and all things could be fulfilled.
The story of the blasphemer is not merely about punishment; it is about covenant love and the weight of His Name upon us—the honor, respect, love, and appreciation for Him and all He has done for us.
His Name is still holy.
But now, under grace, we honor it not from fear of stones…
But from gratitude for the Savior who stood outside the camp in our place. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
How do you speak about God? How do you carry His Name in your daily life? Will you take even 5 minutes to honor and seek Him today? If so, ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this today?”
- Journal what He whispers to you through His Light – the Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do you want me to do?”
- Journal what He whispers – then do it!
Let today be a day of honoring the Lord. Let His Light illuminate you. Bask in His presence then live today as one of His choice, beloved, covenant children glorifying His holy Name.
Prayer
Father, Your Name is holy. Thank You for dwelling among us and for sending Jesus to bear what we deserved. Teach me to honor Your Name more fully—not out of fear, but out of love. Let my words, my choices, and my life reflect reverence for who You are. May Your Name be hallowed in me. In Jesus’ holy name I pray, amen.
