Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Leviticus 25:47-27:13, Mark 10:32-52, Psalm 45:1-17, Proverbs 10:22
Sold, But Not Owned
Oh, how I love the Word of God… even Leviticus! I hope that as we have been exploring the deeper threads of symbolism over the last several days, you do too.
Today, Leviticus 25 opens with verses 47–55, which describe an Israelite who becomes poor and is forced to sell himself to a foreigner living among them. He was desperate, and all he had left to give was himself.
He was sold, but God says he was not permanently owned. God made something very clear in this law:
“The Israelites belong to Me. They are My servants.” (Leviticus 25:55)
Wow. That story is beginning to sound oddly familiar… a desperate man overwhelmed by circumstance, selling himself because it is all he has left to offer—but God makes a way to set him free. I think this story is really about me… or maybe you.
This is how great of a God we serve—even in servitude, this man’s identity did not change. He may have worked under another man’s roof and labored for another man’s gain, but covenant identity outranked circumstance. He was marked by the One True God, claimed for His Kingdom. He was still the Lord’s.
And here is where redemption’s gem shines—God built rescue into the system for him and for us.
A relative could redeem him; if he prospered, he could redeem himself; and at the Year of Jubilee, he would go free automatically.
Freedom was not an afterthought for God. It was built into the plan from the beginning.
The Israelite might have felt trapped. He might have felt ashamed. He might have felt like his situation defined him. But heaven said otherwise:
“You belong to Me.”
And if you trace the pattern forward, you see the greater fulfillment.
Humanity sold itself under sin.
We made choices.
We incurred debt.
We found ourselves serving masters that were never meant to own us.
But we were never meant to stay there—Jesus stepped in as our Kinsman-Redeemer.
Like the relative in Leviticus, He had the right to redeem.
Like Jubilee, He declared release.
Like the covenant promise, He restored what was lost.
We may have been sold for a time, but we were never owned by sin. God always makes a way to be free. Redemption was built into God’s plan from the very beginning.
You may feel bound by a season.
By a failure.
By financial strain.
By regret.
By habits you wish you could undo.
But your hardship does not redefine your belonging.
You belong to the LORD.
And freedom is not wishful thinking—it is covenant reality.
Leviticus whispers what the cross shouts:
You were bought with a price.
And you are restored to rightful belonging with God through Jesus. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with your Redeemer today. Thank Him, praise Him, then ask Him:
- “Lord, What is my true identity with You? Who do You say that I am?”
- Journal it! Write it down! This is who you really are in this world.
- Then ask Him, “Lord, What do You want me to know about this?”
- Journal what He whispers to you. It is so important to write it down to always remember.
- Then finally ask Him: “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal it – then do it! This is your own personal Rhema Word from the Lord. Revelation and instruction personal for you. How wonderful it is!
Let today be a day of reunion and rejoicing with the Savior, Jesus. Let Him redeem you from anything holding you captive. Stand in who He made you to be and celebrate!
Prayer
Father, thank You that even when I feel sold by circumstance, I am never owned by what enslaves me. Thank You that Redemption was not an emergency plan, but part of Your covenant from the beginning. Thank you for my Redeemer and Friend, Jesus, who sets me free. Remind me that I belong to You. Restore my heart to the freedom You purchased through Christ that we may celebrate the wedding feast together, today and always! I pray in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
