Walk Before You Run – A Devotional on Spiritual Growth

Todays One Year Bible Verses: Numbers 30:1-31:54, Luke 4:1-30, Psalm 63:1-11, Proverbs 11:20-21

Trust the Process

This morning, the Lord spoke something very clear to my heart:

“People want to run when they barely know how to walk. They must master walking before they can safely run. Otherwise, they will fall repeatedly, hurting themselves and each other. Faith grows in baby steps. Power and knowledge in My Kingdom come in baby steps, so you don’t get hurt or hurt others.”

As I read through Numbers 30 and 31, I began to see what He meant.

In Numbers 30, God teaches His people about vows—about keeping their word and honoring what they say. It may seem simple, but it reveals something deeper: before we can walk in authority, we must first learn discipline, obedience, and integrity.

Our words carry weight.

If we cannot be trusted with what we say, how can we be trusted with spiritual authority?

Then in Numbers 31, we see the people step into something greater—war, responsibility, and power. But they didn’t fully obey. They compromised. And because of that, correction followed.

They tried to “run” before they had fully learned to walk.

And it led to consequences.

The same is true for us.

We often want to move quickly into purpose, power, and calling. But God, in His love, builds us slowly—step by step—so we are ready to carry what He gives us.

Even Jesus followed this pattern.

He didn’t begin His ministry until He was about thirty years old. And when He did, He didn’t rush into power—He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness first.

There, He faced temptation.

He chose obedience over shortcuts.
Truth over compromise.
Submission over self.

Only after that did He return in the power of the Spirit.

And even then, it was step by step. Temptation by temptation. Rejection by rejection. Each moment building faith, endurance, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

God is not slow.

He is intentional.

He teaches us how to walk so that when we run, we don’t fall—so we don’t hurt ourselves or others.

If you feel like things are moving slowly in your life, don’t be discouraged.

You are learning to walk.

And that is exactly where you need to be.

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes to be with God today. Surrender your heart and ask Him:

  • Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
    • Journal what He reveals to you.
  • Then ask Him, “Lord, what would You have me do?”
    • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Instead of rushing ahead in your own strength, choose to be faithful to Him, trusting that He is preparing you for what is ahead.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for caring enough to prepare me step by step. Help me to be patient in the process and faithful in the small things. Teach me to walk in obedience, integrity, and surrender before I try to run ahead. Strengthen me through every test, and lead me by Your Spirit. I trust that You are building me in the right way, at the right time. Amen.
