The Power and Wonder of God

Have you ever stood beside the ocean and felt incredibly small?

The waves crash against the shore with a force we can’t control. The wind can bend trees and move storm clouds across the sky. Thunder can shake the house. Mountains rise thousands of feet above us, while stars and galaxies stretch farther into space than our minds can comprehend.

And God says all of that is only a fraction of who He is.

Today the Holy Spirit whispered this Gem of Knowledge to me,

“I display My power in the heavens above, in the earth below, in the waves and the wind. Yet, they are still just a fraction of what I am and what I do. No man can ever truly understand Me, but I will continue to reveal Myself little by little as you want Me in your life. Amen.”

That’s incredible to think about.

Everything in creation that makes us stop and stare—the power of a storm, the vastness of the ocean, the height of a mountain, the endless night sky—is showing us something about its Creator.

But none of it shows us all of Him.

We have a tendency to want to understand God completely. We want answers for why He does what He does, why He allows certain things, how He works, what He’s going to do next, and sometimes even why He hasn’t done what we thought He should.

But how could a human mind ever completely understand the One who created it?

Ecclesiastes wrestles with that very thing in today’s reading. Solomon spends much of these chapters trying to make sense of life—why good and bad things happen, why the righteous sometimes suffer while the wicked seem to prosper, and why so much of life doesn’t happen the way we think it should.

Eventually, he acknowledges something important:

“No one can discover everything God is doing under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 8:17 NLT)

We aren’t going to understand everything God does.

And maybe we’re not supposed to.

That doesn’t mean God doesn’t want us to know Him. Today’s Gem actually tells us the opposite.

He wants to reveal Himself to us.

But He does it little by little.

I think about how relationships work. You can meet someone and learn facts about them very quickly, but truly knowing them takes time. Their personality, heart, character, humor, reactions, values, and ways are revealed through years of conversations and experiences together.

Our relationship with God is even deeper.

The more we want Him in our lives, the more opportunities we give Him to show us who He is. We recognize Him in Scripture. We discover His faithfulness when we trust Him. We experience His comfort when we’re hurting. We recognize His correction when we’re heading the wrong direction. We see His provision when we don’t know how something will work out.

And sometimes He simply gets our attention through what He created.

A sunset.

A storm rolling across the horizon.

The sound of waves crashing against the shore.

A sky filled with stars.

Creation can remind us: The God who made this is the God I’m talking to.

Psalm 48 says, “For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.” (Psalm 48:14 NLT)

We may never fully understand Him, but we can continue knowing Him more each day.

And maybe that’s part of the wonder of walking with God.

There will always be more of Him to discover.

The God who commands the wind and waves, formed the mountains, and stretched the heavens above us is inviting us into relationship with Him.

And every time we draw closer, He gives us another glimpse.💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take at least 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

• “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
  • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
• Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
  • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Take a few minutes today to notice something God created—the sky, wind, clouds, trees, water, stars, or even the ground beneath your feet. Let it remind you how enormous and powerful He is. Then pay attention to what He begins showing you about Him through it.

Prayer

Dear Father, I am amazed by You. Your power is displayed throughout creation, yet even the greatest things I can see are only a glimpse of who You are. I know I will never completely understand You, but I want to keep knowing You more and more. Reveal Yourself to me little by little as I seek You. Open my eyes to recognize Your character, Your ways, and Your presence in my life. I want more of You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
