Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 28:1–29:32 | 1 Timothy 1:1–20 | Psalm 86:1–17 | Proverbs 25:17
The Son Sets You Free
Have you ever felt trapped by something you couldn’t seem to overcome? Maybe it’s fear, guilt, shame, unforgiveness, or even something from your past that continues to haunt you. You want to move forward, but no matter how hard you try, you keep finding yourself struggling with the same things.
Sometimes we become so accustomed to carrying these burdens that we forget what it feels like to live without them. We learn to function under their weight, convincing ourselves that this is simply how life is going to be.
But Jesus offers us something so much better!
In today’s Gem of Knowledge, the Holy Spirit gives us a beautiful invitation:
“Come to Me and believe. There is freedom here. Amen”
I love the simplicity of those words. He doesn’t say to get your life together first, overcome all your struggles, or prove yourself worthy of His help. He simply says, “Come to Me and believe.”
But believing is more than acknowledging that God exists. It’s trusting Him enough to accept what He says as truth and allowing that truth to change how we live.
In today’s reading from 1 Timothy 1, Paul shares a powerful testimony of God’s mercy. Before encountering Jesus, Paul persecuted believers and actively opposed the very faith he would later devote his life to proclaiming. Yet God didn’t reject him because of his past. Instead, He showed him extraordinary mercy and gave him a new purpose.
Paul declares:
“This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’—and I am the worst of them all.” —1 Timothy 1:15 NLT
Think about that! Paul had every reason to live burdened by guilt and regret over the things he’d done. But instead of allowing his past to define him, he embraced the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ.
His past didn’t disappear, but it no longer defined him..
That’s the kind of freedom Jesus offers us!
Interestingly, today’s reading in Jeremiah gives us another perspective on freedom. God’s people were living in captivity in Babylon, and the false prophet Hananiah promised that their captivity would end within two years. It was exactly what the people wanted to hear, but it wasn’t what God had said.
Through Jeremiah, God revealed that their captivity would last much longer. Yet He also promised that He had not forgotten them and that He would eventually bring them home.
This reminds me that freedom doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes we want God to immediately remove our difficult circumstances, while He is working to transform our hearts in the midst of them.
We can experience spiritual freedom even when our circumstances haven’t changed. We can have peace in uncertainty, joy in hardship, and hope when the future seems unclear because our freedom is found in Jesus, not in everything going our way.
Psalm 86:5 reminds us of God’s beautiful character:
“O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.” —Psalm 86:5 NLT
What a wonderful assurance! God isn’t reluctant to forgive us or waiting for us to become perfect before welcoming us into His presence. He is ready to forgive and full of unfailing love.
And Jesus tells us in John 8:36:
“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” —John 8:36 NLT
Notice that Jesus doesn’t say we might be free or that freedom is reserved for a select few. He tells us that when He sets us free, we are truly free!
But we have to believe Him enough to receive what He’s offering.
Stop carrying guilt that He’s already forgiven, believing lies about ourselves that contradict His Word, or hold on to fears that He has invited us to surrender.
Perhaps the greatest prison isn’t always the one built around us, but the one we’ve allowed to remain within us.
Jesus is inviting us to come to Him, trust His promises, and walk in the freedom He purchased for us.
We don’t have to earn it. We simply need to come to Him in faith, receive His grace, and allow His truth to transform our lives. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
- Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He reveals – then do it!
Let today be a day of new-found freedom in the Lord.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the freedom You offer through Jesus Christ. Thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love, mercy, or forgiveness. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed fear, guilt, shame, or unbelief to keep me bound when You’ve already invited me to walk in freedom. Help me believe Your Word, trust Your promises, and receive everything Jesus has made available to me. Reveal any lies I’ve accepted and replace them with Your truth. Teach me to live each day in the freedom, peace, and joy that come from knowing You. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.
