The Power of Our God

When I was on vacation in Alaska, I saw the biggest chains I have ever seen in my life coming off the front of a huge barge. They were incredible! I couldn’t help but marvel at their size and strength. Those chains were designed to hold tremendous weight, and I can’t imagine what it would take to break even one of them.

And to think… Jesus can break them all!

Chains are designed to be strong, durable, and nearly impossible to pull apart. Their entire purpose is to hold something securely in place. But the chains we sometimes carry in our lives aren’t always visible. Fear, addiction, shame, unforgiveness, bitterness, and destructive patterns can hold us captive just as surely as any physical chain.

And sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we simply cannot seem to break free.

But the Holy Spirit reminded me in today’s Gem of Knowledge:

“Chains are strong and meant to hold, but I have the power to break them all off of you.”

What a powerful reminder! The strength of our chains doesn’t determine the possibility of our freedom. God’s power does.

In today’s reading from Jeremiah 30, God speaks to His people about their suffering and the consequences of their disobedience. They had experienced tremendous hardship, and their circumstances seemed hopeless. Yet God didn’t leave them without hope. He promised to restore them and bring them back from captivity.

In Jeremiah 30:17, God declares that He will restore their health and heal their wounds. Then, in Jeremiah 31:3, He reminds them of His everlasting love and continued faithfulness.

I find that so encouraging because it reminds us that even when we’ve contributed to our own bondage through poor decisions or disobedience, God’s mercy is still available to us.

He doesn’t look at our chains and decide we’re too far gone. He sees what has held us captive and offers a way to freedom.

But there’s something important we need to understand. Not every chain is broken simply because we wish it would disappear. Sometimes freedom requires us to surrender what we’ve been holding on to, repent of destructive choices, forgive someone who hurt us, or trust God enough to walk away from something familiar.

And sometimes the hardest part isn’t believing God has the power to break our chains. It’s believing He will do it for us.

We may look at our circumstances and think, “I’ve struggled with this for so long. I’ve tried everything. Maybe this is just who I am.”

But that’s not what God says about us!

As I shared in yesterday’s devotional, Jesus declared:

“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” —John 8:36 NLT

Yesterday, we talked about coming to Jesus and believing in the freedom He offers. Today, He’s reminding us that no matter how strong our chains may be, His power is greater. We don’t have to remain bound by the things He has the power to break.

In today’s reading from 1 Timothy 2:5–6, Paul reminds us that Jesus Christ is the one Mediator between God and humanity and that He gave His life as a ransom for all. Our freedom came at a tremendous price, and Jesus willingly paid it!

We don’t have to fight our battles alone or somehow make ourselves strong enough to overcome everything that holds us captive. We have a Savior who understands our struggles and has the power to deliver us.

Of course, freedom doesn’t always happen the way we expect or come in the timing we want. Sometimes God delivers us suddenly, while other times He leads us through a process of healing, renewal, and learning to walk differently. But His ability to restore us is never limited by the strength of what has held us captive.

And I think that’s what makes today’s Gem so beautiful.

God isn’t asking us to prove how strong we are. He’s reminding us how powerful He is.

Don’t let the strength of your chains convince you that freedom is impossible.

The same God who promised to restore His people from captivity is still able to bring healing, restoration, and freedom into our lives today.

Chains may be designed to hold us, but they could never withstand the power of Jesus Christ! 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take time to be with the Chain Breaker today, even if only 5 minutes. Ask Him:

  • “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
    • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Invite Jesus to reveal what’s holding you captive and trust Him to break every chain!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Your power is greater than anything that seeks to hold me captive. Thank You for Your everlasting love, Your mercy, and Your promise of restoration. Forgive me for the times I’ve believed my struggles were too great or my chains too strong for You to break. Help me surrender everything that keeps me from walking in the freedom Jesus purchased for me. Give me the courage to follow Your guidance, the strength to make necessary changes, and the faith to trust You through every step of the process. Break every chain that is keeping me from becoming who You’ve called me to be. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
