Stay Close To Him

Have you ever encountered a snake in the wild? Most of us know that when we see one coiled up, ready to strike, the smartest thing to do is keep our distance! We certainly wouldn’t walk over and start poking at it to see what happens. LOL! We recognize the danger and do our best to avoid it.

Yet how often do we fail to exercise that same wisdom when it comes to spiritual danger?

As we finish our women’s retreat today, where we’ve spent time learning about intimacy with God, I find today’s Gem of Knowledge especially fitting.

“The enemy is coiled up ready to strike at any moment. Keep your distance from evil so it doesn’t get you. Amen.”

What a powerful reminder that our relationship with God isn’t simply about enjoying His presence, although that is certainly a wonderful part of it! It’s also about learning to recognize His voice, follow His guidance, and remain close to the One who loves us enough to warn us when danger is near.

God invites us into intimacy because He loves us and desires a genuine relationship with us. And like any loving Father, He wants to protect His children.

But we must remember that we have a very real enemy.

First Peter 5:8 (NLT) warns us:

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

Notice that Scripture doesn’t tell us to be terrified of the enemy. It tells us to be alert! There’s a difference between living in fear and walking in wisdom.

In today’s reading from Jeremiah, we see God’s judgment pronounced against nations that had placed their confidence in their own strength, possessions, and pride. Rather than humbling themselves before God, they trusted in things that could never truly save them.

And isn’t that one of the enemy’s greatest strategies? Convincing us that we can manage life just fine without depending on God.

Sometimes spiritual danger doesn’t look dangerous at all. It might begin with a small compromise, an unhealthy relationship, a little bitterness, or a temptation we convince ourselves we can handle.

But why would we want to get close enough to evil to discover whether it can hurt us?

In 2 Timothy 4, Paul writes about the difficulties he endured while faithfully serving the Lord. He experienced opposition, abandonment, and persecution, yet he recognized God’s faithful presence.

Second Timothy 4:17 (NLT) says:

“But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength so that I might preach the Good News in its entirety for all the Gentiles to hear.”

I love that! Paul didn’t say he never faced danger. He said the Lord stood with him!

And that brings us right back to intimacy with God.

When we spend time with Him through prayer, worship, studying His Word, and learning to recognize His voice, we grow in our ability to discern what is good and what is dangerous. We become more sensitive to His correction and more willing to follow His direction.

Psalm 95 reminds us that we are the people He watches over, the flock under His care. What a beautiful picture!

A sheep doesn’t have to defeat every predator on its own. It needs to recognize the shepherd’s voice and remain under his care.

As we leave this retreat and return to our everyday responsibilities, distractions, and challenges, my prayer is that we won’t leave behind the intimacy we’ve been cultivating with the Lord.

Because intimacy with God isn’t something we experience only at a retreat. It’s a relationship we’re invited to enjoy every single day!

The enemy may be waiting for an opportunity to strike, but we don’t have to live in fear. We can live confidently, knowing that our loving Father is faithful and His presence is our refuge and peace.

Stay alert, keep your distance from evil, and draw near to the One who loves you!

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take time to be with the Lord today, even if it’s just 5 minutes. Ask Him:

  • “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
    • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Let today be the day you commit to making time for the Lord every day, trusting Him to guide your steps.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to warn me of danger and for inviting me into a close, personal relationship with You. Help me recognize the enemy’s schemes and give me wisdom to avoid anything that would draw me away from You. As we finish this retreat, may the intimacy we’ve experienced with You continue to grow in our everyday lives. Teach us to recognize Your voice, trust Your guidance, and remain faithful to Your Word. Thank You for being our refuge, our strength, and our peace. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, amen.
