Why the Fat of the Liver and Kidneys? | Hidden Surrender in Leviticus

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Leviticus 6:1-7:27, Mark 3:7-30, Psalm 37:1-11, Proverbs 10:3-4

All the Fat is the Lord’s

Have you ever noticed that in Leviticus God repeatedly commands that the fat, the kidneys, and the liver lobe be burned on the altar?

That feels… oddly specific.

But nothing in Leviticus is random.

We already know fat represents the richest portion — the strength, the stored energy, the survival reserve. It keeps the body warm. It sustains you in famine. It protects your organs.

And God says:

“All the fat is the Lord’s.” (Leviticus 3:16)

He wasn’t asking for leftovers. He was asking for what sustains you.

But here’s the layer that changes everything. In Hebrew thought, the kidneys (kilyah) were considered the seat of conscience and deep motives. The Hebrew וּכְלָי֗וֹת (ū·ḵə·lā·yō·wṯ) or (kilyah) literally means “a kidney, the mind”.

That means in Hebrew:

Psalm 7:9 says God tests the “heart and kidneys.”
Jeremiah 17:10 says the Lord searches the heart and examines the kidneys. 😱🤯

They believed your deepest motives, emotions, and moral processing lived there.

And what do the liver and kidneys do physically?

They purify the blood.
They filter toxins.
They regulate what flows through you.
They protect your life from within.

So when God required the fat around the kidneys and liver to be burned, He wasn’t just regulating dietary practice.

He was teaching covenant surrender. Not just behavior. Not just outward obedience. But the hidden inner life.

The strength you rely on.
The reserves you protect.
The filtering system you trust.
The motives no one sees.

And remember — the burnt offering was left on the altar all night, fully consumed by the fire God Himself lights in Leviticus 6:9, 12–13. It was not human fire. It was divine fire. And the sacrifice remained there until nothing was left.

“All the fat is Mine.”

It is as if God was saying:

Give Me what sustains you.
Give Me your survival instinct.
Give Me your hidden motives.
Let Me be your purifier.

And then Jesus comes.

He does not just offer outward obedience.
He offers His entire inner life.
He gives His strength.
His breath.
His final reserves.

And like the burnt offering, He was fully consumed — not by random circumstance, but by the will of the Father. Nothing was held back. No reserve remained.

Through His blood, we are purified — not just forgiven externally, but cleansed internally.

He becomes the purifier of the bloodstream of the soul.

This is not beginner faith.

This is mature surrender.

Not just, “Lord, forgive my sin.”

But, “Lord, You can have what fuels me…You can have it all!” 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Ask yourself honestly:

What is my “fat”?
What do I rely on for warmth, security, energy, survival?
Have I truly surrendered my hidden motives and inner reserves to Him?

Then, take 5 minutes to let Him speak to you about it. Ask Him:

  • Lord, what do You want me to know about this?”
    • Journal what He whispers to you, so you always remember.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Today, consciously yield your inner life to God — not just your behavior…your all.

Prayer

Father, You see deeper than anyone else. You test the heart and the hidden places. I surrender not only my outward actions but my inner motives, my reserves, my strength, and what I rely on for security. Purify me from the inside out. Be my sustainer. Be my warmth. Be my life. Consume what needs to be consumed, and make me wholly Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
