Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Leviticus 11:1-12:8, Mark 5:21-43, Psalm 38:1-22, Proverbs 10:8-9
Clean VS Unclean
“For I am the Lord your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.” – Leviticus 11:44 (NLT)
Leviticus 11 can feel like a strange grocery list — split hooves, chewing cud, fins, scales, certain birds, certain insects. But was God just regulating food or could there be more to it?
When we dig a little deeper the gems begin to emerge – He was teaching discernment and how to live because what you consume becomes part of you.
🐄 Land Animals — Discernment & Meditation
Clean land animals had two traits:
• Split hooves – divided in two
• They chewed the cud – regurgitates to enable proper digestion
Split hooves represent separation — a life set apart to God. This gives us the ability to walk through the world without stumbling.
Chewing the cud represents meditation — slowly processing and revisiting truth until it can be absorbed.
Spiritually, God was saying:
Do not feed on what lacks discernment or makes you unstable.
Do not swallow ideas without processing them through truth.
🌊 Water Animals — Direction & Protection
On land, the qualifications were about walking and digesting — split hoof and chewing the cud. But when God turns to the sea, something changes.
“You may eat any fish that has both fins and scales…” (Leviticus 11:9 NLT)
Again, two requirements, but notice something deeper: On land, you stand. In water, you cannot. Water is unstable. You cannot stand on it. So…
Fish had to have:
• Fins – they steer the fish
• Scales – the cover and protect the fish
Fins give direction.
Scales provide covering.
We are fully engulfed in a shifting environment → culture, opinions, trends — we need direction and protection!
Don’t consume anything that drifts, lacks conviction for God, or lacks spiritual covering.
🕊 Birds — What Fills Your Mind
Many forbidden birds were scavengers — feeding on death. Spiritually, this speaks to what we allow into our thoughts and who we look up to. Are you feeding on anger, gossip, division, or any type of moral decay? Are you looking up to people who look majestic and impressive, but feed on death?
Not everything that flies overhead is meant to nest in your mind.
And not every “bird”” that looks powerful, intelligent, or beautiful is good.
🦗 Insects — Crawling or Leaping
Most insects crawl low, but the permitted ones had jointed legs for leaping. Those that crawled low were always in the dust living close to the dirt of worldly things, But those who leap launch upward to stay clean.
Some influences keep you low.
Others help you rise.
What habits are shaping you? How will you live?
It reminds me of the pig pen in the parable of the prodigal son. Will we wallow in the pig pen or get up and go back to the Father to live a clean life?
Leviticus 11 was never just about food – it was about identity!
God was teaching His people:
You are set apart.
You do not consume what everyone else consumes…live clean lives.
Today, we are not under dietary law.
But the principle still remains:
- What we watch
- What we read
- What we celebrate
- Who we follow
- What we dwell on
- How we live
All of it feeds something – and what you feed will always grow!
Holiness is not restriction. It is protection.
What will you choose to feed on – the clean or unclean? 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want to tell me specifically about this today?”
- Journal whatever He reveals to you.
- Then ask Him, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit – then do it!
Let today be a day of cleansing from the inside out with the Lord.
Prayer
Father, teach me discernment in what I consume. Help me meditate on truth and reject what corrupts.
Guard my mind, my appetite, and my spirit. Make me holy because You are holy. I give you all the praise and glory in Jesus’ name, amen.
