Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Numbers 32:1-33:39, Luke 4:31-5:11, Psalm64:1-10, Proverbs 11:22
Speak or Be Silent?
This morning, I asked the Lord what He wanted me to share, and this is what He said:
“Good news is to be shared with gladness. Declare it boldly with joy. Bad news must be handled with great care and guarded, sharing only with those whom God directs.”
As I read through today’s scriptures, I began to see how this plays out in real life.
In Numbers 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad came to Moses with a request to settle on the east side of the Jordan. On the surface, it seemed reasonable, but Moses immediately recognized that if this was spoken carelessly among the people, it could discourage the hearts of the rest of Israel. Their words had the potential to weaken faith and create hesitation in a moment that required courage.
They didn’t spread this idea throughout the camp. They brought it to Moses first, where it could be weighed, corrected, and aligned with God’s will. It was handled with care, not broadcast without thought.
Then in Numbers 33, we see something very different. The journey of Israel is written out—every place they traveled, every step along the way.
It is a record of what God had done.
This wasn’t something to guard or keep quiet. It was testimony! It was meant to be remembered and shared because it would strengthen faith for the future. God wanted His people to look back and see His hand in every step.
When we move into Luke 4 and 5, we see Jesus stepping into His ministry, and the Good News begins to spread. He teaches with authority, delivers those who are oppressed, and heals the sick. Everywhere He goes, people begin to talk—not because of fear, but because of what God is doing. The news spreads because it brings hope and life.
Then in Psalm 64, we see David in a very different situation. He is surrounded by threats and harmful words spoken against him. There is real trouble, real fear, and real injustice. But David does not spread this among the people or allow it to stir up greater fear. Instead, he brings it directly to God. He pours out his complaint before the Lord, trusting Him to handle what he cannot. And God does just that.
In His mercy He turns the situation, brings justice, and reveals truth, so that what began as something hidden and harmful becomes something that ultimately points back to Him.
But for those who do evil it says,
“their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their head in scorn.” -Psalm 64:8 (NLT)
Through all of this, a clear pattern emerges:
- There are things we are meant to bring quietly before the Lord, trusting Him to handle them.
- And there are things we are meant to declare boldly because they build faith.
When we confuse the two, we can unintentionally spread discouragement or magnify problems that were meant to be surrendered to God. But when we follow His leading, our words become life-giving.
We learn to guard what could harm and release what brings hope. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes today to go to the Lord. Notice His peace as you approach surrendered to Him. Then ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
- Always write down what He gives you, whether it is words, impressions, visions, etc. If you don’t understand at first ask Him what it means – He will tell you.
- Then ask Him, “What do You want me to do?”
- Write down what He reveals – then do it!
Let today be a day of deeper insight and understanding of God and His ways then allow Him to show you how to walk in it with Him.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to be wise with my words. Help me to bring my burdens and concerns to You instead of spreading them in ways that could discourage others. Help me to be someone trustworthy of others bad news. Give me discernment to know what to guard and what to share, and fill my heart with Your goodness so that what I speak brings life, hope, and encouragement. Give me boldness to declare Your truth with joy and trust You with everything else. Amen.
