Be Still and Know That I Am | Trusting God In The Fire

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Numbers 36:1-Deuteronomy 1:46, Luke 5:29-6:11, Psalm 66:1-20, Proverbs 11:24-26

It Is Well

Yesterday, there was a wildfire nearby, and police were going door to door evacuating residents. It was urgent, serious—the kind of moment that makes everything in you want to react.

But in that moment, I remembered something the Lord spoke to me ten years ago when I first moved here:

“I put you there because it is safe.”

I have stood on that promise through many tornado warnings without fear. But this one felt different. Fear tried to rise up in me, pressing in, asking me to question what God had already spoken.

And I had a choice.

I could believe what I was seeing and hearing… or I could believe what God had said.

So I chose God.

I stood on my front porch and began to pray. I reminded Him of His promise—not because He had forgotten, but because I needed to stand on it. Then I declared out loud His protection over my home and over this area.

A little while later, my neighbor—who had left—called me. She said she felt convicted not to flee in fear, but to stand in faith. As she was returning home, she saw police gathered at the end of our road and asked what was happening.

They told her, “Oh, you’re good. The fire shifted and changed directions a little while ago.”

I know what that was.

That was the hand of God.

The fire had to obey.

And in that moment, I heard the Lord speak so clearly:

“Be still and know that I am. I am over all things. I am watching over you. I am working for your good, and it is well.”

There are moments in life when everything within us wants to react—to run, to fix, to control, to understand. Fear presses in, circumstances feel urgent, and the unknown feels overwhelming.

But God calls us to something higher:

Be still.

Not because nothing is happening, but because He is.

Psalm 66 reminds us that even when we walk through fire and flood, it is not outside of God’s hand:

“You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver… We went through fire and flood, but you brought us to a place of great abundance.”

The fire may be real. The pressure may be real. But so is His authority over it.

Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern again and again. God is always working—ordering what we cannot see, moving in ways we do not expect, and accomplishing what only He can do. Even when it feels slow, uncertain, or completely outside of our understanding, He is still in control.

What looks like delay is often positioning.
What feels like pressure is often refinement.
What seems uncertain is never outside of His authority.

And sometimes, the greatest act of faith is not striving—it is standing.

Standing on what He said.
Standing when fear tells you to run.
Standing when circumstances try to override His promise.

Because stillness is not the absence of movement—it is the presence of trust.

It is choosing to believe that God is who He says He is, even when everything around you tries to say otherwise.

He is over all things.
He is watching over you.
He is working for your good.

And when you truly believe that, you can stand in the middle of uncertainty, in the face of the fire, and declare with confidence:

It is well.

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes today to be with the Lord. Thank Him for His sovereignty over your life and ask Him:

  • Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
    • Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit
  • Then ask Him, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Let today be a day of standing still with God, knowing He is with you in all things.

Prayer

Lord, help me to be still before You. Quiet the part of me that wants to control, understand, and fix everything. Teach me to trust that You are working in ways I cannot see. Remind me that You are over all things, that You are watching over me, and that You are working for my good. I choose to rest in You today and believe that it is well. Amen.
