An Active Pursuit of God

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Judges 6:1-40, Luke 22:54-23:12, Psalm 95:1-96:13, Proverbs 14:5-6

Don’t Stay Where You Are

There is a difference between knowing about God and actually knowing Him.

In today’s Gem the Lord shows us that one is passive. The other requires movement:

“Continuously seek Me and My Kingdom. This is an active pursuit that takes time and intention. It is not passive but active, requiring you to move and do.”

In Judges 6, we see Gideon in a place of fear and uncertainty. Israel had fallen into oppression, and instead of standing in faith, Gideon was hiding—threshing wheat in a winepress, trying to survive quietly. Yet even there, God called him forward. He didn’t leave him where he was. He invited him into something greater, something that required action, obedience, and trust.

Gideon had questions. He needed confirmation, and each time, God showed up. At every step, God called him to move—to tear down the altar, to step out, to follow through. His relationship with God was not passive. It required participation.

We see the opposite in Luke 22. Peter had walked closely with Jesus, yet in the moment of pressure, he followed at a distance. When the opportunity came to stand, he hesitated, and eventually denied Him. It wasn’t a lack of knowledge—Peter knew exactly who Jesus was. But in that moment, he did not actively stand in it.

Seeking God is not just about what we believe internally. It is revealed in how we respond externally.

Psalm 95 calls us into this kind of active relationship:
“Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.” (Psalm 95:1, NLT)
Notice the language—come, sing, shout. These are not passive words. They require engagement. And Psalm 96 continues this call, inviting us to declare His glory, to worship, to give Him what He is due.

This is what seeking looks like. It is intentional. It is expressed. It moves.

Proverbs 14 brings a sobering contrast:
“A mocker seeks wisdom and never finds it, but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding.” (Proverbs 14:6, NLT)
There are those who say they are seeking, but never truly pursue. They circle truth without surrendering to it. Real seeking requires humility, willingness, and action—and then God shows up and delivers.

God is not hiding from us. But He does ask us to come after Him.

Not casually. Not occasionally.
Continuously.

Seeking Him means opening your Bible when you don’t feel like it. It means praying when your mind is distracted. It means choosing obedience when it would be easier to stay comfortable. It means stepping out when He calls, even if you feel unsure like Gideon or afraid like Peter.

This kind of pursuit takes time and intention. But it is in that movement—those daily choices—that we begin to truly know Him.

And when you seek Him like that, you will find Him—and you will be blessed. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Ask yourself honestly: am I passively believing, or actively pursuing? then take at least 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

  • Lord, what do You want me to know about this today?”
    • Journal what He reveals to you by His Holy Spirit
  • Then ask Him, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He reveals to you – then do it!

Let today be the day you move in closer to the Lord. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Just move toward Him.

Prayer

Father,
I don’t want to follow You at a distance or settle into passivity. Stir something within me that desires to seek You more fully. Give me the discipline to pursue You with intention and the courage to act when You call. Help me not just to believe, but to move in obedience from knowing You. Draw me closer as I actively seek You. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, amen.
