The Call to Purity: Insights from Isaiah 6

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Isaiah 6:1-7:25, 2 Corinthians 11:16-33, Psalm 54:1-7, Proverbs 23:1-3

“It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple.”
Isaiah 6:1, NLT

Have you ever wondered if you will see the Lord? Does that even happen?

Isaiah did. And his response was not triumph but trembling:

“It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
Isaiah 6:5, NLT

Even Isaiah—a prophet whose writings fill sixty-six chapters of Scripture—immediately confessed his unworthiness in God’s holy presence. This “major prophet” (so-called because of the length of his book, not because of greater importance than the others) was still overwhelmed by the reality of his sin. Standing before God’s throne exposes us for who we really are.

But God’s response was not condemnation. It was cleansing.

“Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, ‘See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.’”
Isaiah 6:6–7, NLT

🔥 Fire in Scripture often represents purification. The coal was taken from the altar of sacrifice, pointing us directly to Jesus Christ—the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Just as a coal can cauterize a wound—burning away infection and sealing it for healing—so Christ’s sacrifice cauterizes our spirits. His consuming fire destroys corruption, closes spiritual wounds, and ushers in restoration.

For our God is a devouring fire.” — Hebrews 12:29, NLT

Jesus doesn’t just forgive; He makes us whole. He doesn’t just cancel guilt; He renews our capacity to live free, healed, and confident in Him.

Isaiah’s cleansing wasn’t the end of the story—it was the beginning. Immediately afterward, God asked, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” and Isaiah, now purified, could say boldly, “Here I am. Send me.” (Isaiah 6:8). Cleansing leads to calling. Healing leads to mission.

We may not see God with our physical eyes right now, but Jesus promised:

  • “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” — Matthew 5:8, NLT
  • “And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads.” — Revelation 22:4, NLT

We can “see” Him today in the evidence of His Spirit within us: when He transforms our hearts, when He heals our wounds, and when He answers prayers in ways too personal to be coincidence. Look for Him in the beauty of creation, in the Word, in answered prayers, and in the still, small voice whispering truth.

Isaiah thought he was unworthy, but God made him ready. The same is true for Moses, who stammered. For Saul, who persecuted the church. For Paul, who became its greatest missionary. And for you.

Never doubt God’s unfailing love. Never doubt He has a calling and purpose for your life—even if you don’t see it yet. Keep seeking Him, and you will find Him. One day, you will see the face of the Lord.

Action (5 minutes) — Who Am I?

Ask the Lord two questions:

  1. “Who do You say that I am?”
  2. “What do You want me to know about that?”

Write down what He shows you—don’t overthink, just listen and record.

Short Prayer

Lord, I am unworthy on my own, yet You purify me through Jesus’ sacrifice. Burn away the lies, cauterize my wounds, and fill me with Your Spirit. Teach me who I am in You, and send me where You will. I want to see Your face and live in the light of Your calling. Amen. 🌿
