New Beginnings: Let There Be Light | A New Year’s Day Devotional

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Genesis 1:1-2:25, Matthew 1:1-2:12, Psalm 1:1-6, Proverbs 1:1-6

Created On Purpose

Today is January 1—the dawn of a new year, filled with the hope of new beginnings. And fittingly, today’s Scripture takes us back to the very beginning of our story.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

Before anything existed, God was there. His Spirit hovered over the waters, present, attentive, and intentional. And then He spoke: “Let there be light.” With those words, God brought order out of chaos, beauty out of darkness, and life where there was nothing before.

This same God is still speaking today. He still declares light over darkness. As we step into this new year, He invites us to turn toward Him and allow His light to shine into every part of our lives—places of uncertainty, weariness, hope, and longing. Nothing is hidden from Him, and nothing is beyond His reach.

We see God’s intentionality again in Matthew 1–2, through the genealogy of Jesus. Generation after generation, God was faithfully weaving His plan until the moment our Savior was born. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was random. Every life mattered in the unfolding of that story.

And that includes you.

God planned for you from the beginning. The way you look, think, feel, speak, and live was not an accident. Generation upon generation led to this moment in time—your life, your place in His story. You matter. You have worth. You are an essential thread in the tapestry God has been weaving since creation. Without you, the picture would be incomplete.

Because God loves you, He has also given you His Word. From the very beginning, He knew how deeply we would need it—to guide us, teach us, comfort us, and help us know Him. When we turn to Him, we begin to “delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night,” because we see how His truth brings life and goodness to every part of our world.

So on this New Year’s Day, let us choose wisdom.
“Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance…” (Proverbs 1:5–6)

As this year begins, may we hear His voice again saying, “Let there be light,” and may we welcome that light into every corner of our lives. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

As you begin this new year, take a quiet moment with the Lord and ask Him to shine His light into every part of your life—especially the places you’ve kept hidden, delayed, or felt unsure about. Open your Bible and commit to meeting with Him regularly, even if it’s just a few minutes a day. Sit with the Lord and ask:

  • Lord, what do You want me personally to know about this today?
    • Journal what He whispers by His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He whispers – then do it!

Let this year begin not with striving, but with surrender—inviting God to shape, guide, and renew you from the inside out.

Prayer

Lord God,
You are the Creator of all things, and You were there at the very beginning. As I step into this new year, I invite You to speak again into my life and say, “Let there be light.” Shine Your truth into every corner of my heart. Bring order where there has been confusion, hope where there has been darkness, and joy where there has been weariness. Thank You for creating me with intention and love, for weaving my life into Your story from the beginning. Teach me through Your Word. Guide my steps. I surrender this year to You and trust You with all that is ahead. Amen.
