Stop Striving and Surrender | A 5 Minutes with God Devotional

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Judges 15:1-16:31, John 2:1-25, Psalm 103:1-22, Proverbs 14:17-19

Let It Go!

The Lord reminds us of something beautiful today in this Gem of Knowledge:

“Aren’t you tired of striving on your own? Let Me help you. You say you want help but don’t surrender it to Me. Let Me help you by simply asking Me and letting it go in your heart and mind. This allows Me to move—then I will take it and bear it for you. Amen.”

Striving is exhausting. Trying to figure everything out, carrying what feels too heavy, and replaying situations over and over in your mind will wear you down. And yet, even when we say we want help, we often continue to hold onto the very things we’ve asked God to take.

In Judges 15 and 16, Samson operates in strength, but not in surrender. He reacts, moves, and fights, but rarely pauses to seek God first. His life shows us that strength without surrender leads to strain, and eventually, it leads to collapse. He had what he needed, but he didn’t consistently rely on the One who gave it to him.

In contrast, John 2 shows us a different response. At the wedding in Cana, when the problem arises, Mary does not try to fix it herself. She brings the need to Jesus and then tells the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5, NLT) She presents the situation and releases it. She does not manage the outcome, and she does not strive to control what happens next. Because of that, Jesus moves.

This is what surrender looks like. It is not just asking God for help—it is trusting Him enough to let go of the need to carry it yourself.

Psalm 103 reminds us who God is in the middle of all of this. He is the One who forgives, heals, redeems, and surrounds us with love and mercy. He is not distant or unwilling. He is ready to carry what we were never meant to hold. But often, the reason we still feel the weight is not because He hasn’t offered to take it, but because we haven’t fully released it.

Proverbs 14 shows how easily striving can lead us into reaction and poor decisions. When we hold onto things too tightly, we rush, we try to control, and we respond from pressure instead of trust. But surrender slows us down and re-centers us in truth.

There is a difference between asking God for help and actually surrendering something to Him. We can pray about a situation and still carry it in our thoughts, worry about it in our hearts, and try to manage it in our own strength. True surrender means releasing it fully—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually—and trusting that He will take it from there.

When you truly let go, you make room for God to move in ways you cannot. Not because He was unable before, but because you have stopped holding onto what He is ready to carry. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today and ask Him:

  • Lord, what do You want me to know about this today?”
    • Write down what He reveals to you.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Write down what He reveals – then do it!

Let today be a day of intentional release to God—both in your heart and in your mind…let it go!

Prayer

Dear Lord,
I’m tired of striving and carrying what You never asked me to hold. Help me not only to bring things to You, but to truly surrender them. Teach me to release control, trust You fully, and allow You to move in ways I cannot. In Your mighty name I pray, amen.
