Today’s One Year Bible Verses: 1 Samuel 24:1–25:44, John 10:22–42, Psalm 116:1–19, Proverbs 15:20–21
Follow Him In The Storm
One of the hardest things to accept in life is that not every chapter of our story feels good while we are living through it.
Some seasons are beautiful and full of joy. Others feel confusing, painful, unfair, disappointing, or deeply stretching. And when we are in those harder moments, it can be difficult to understand how God could possibly use them for anything meaningful.
Today’s Gem of Knowledge says,
“Not everything we face is good or easy, but they are all part of the story that must take place to glorify me and you. Trust me.”
There is such tenderness in those last two words:
Trust me.
Not “understand everything.”
Not “have all the answers.”
Not “never struggle emotionally.”
Simply:
Trust Me.
David’s life in today’s reading is such a powerful picture of this truth. David had already been anointed king, yet he was still being hunted like a criminal. Imagine the confusion of carrying a promise from God while simultaneously running through caves and wilderness trying to survive.
And then comes the moment in 1 Samuel 24 where David has the perfect opportunity to kill Saul and end his suffering immediately. Everyone around David encouraged him to take matters into his own hands. From a human perspective, it probably even looked justified.
But David trusted God with the unfolding of the story.
David understood something many of us struggle with: just because an opportunity presents itself does not mean it is God’s way of fulfilling the promise. Sometimes God is developing character, humility, restraint, wisdom, and dependence in us through the process itself.
The cave seasons matter too.
Perhaps one of the deeper questions hidden within difficult seasons is this: Can God trust me with what He has promised?
David was not perfect, but even in his failures, he continually returned to the Lord with humility and repentance. Because God could trust David’s heart, He was able to place him in positions of influence and power without David misusing it.
Sometimes the process is not only about preparing the promise for us…
it is also about preparing us for the promise.
If we are honest, most of us would prefer a story without pain, delay, betrayal, grief, stretching, or uncertainty. But some of the deepest intimacy with God is formed in those exact places.
Jesus speaks about this kind of trust in John 10 when He describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. Sheep do not always understand where the Shepherd is leading them, but they learn to recognize His voice and trust His care.
That is what faith often looks like:
continuing to follow Him even when the path feels uncomfortable or unclear.
Sometimes we look back years later and realize the hardest parts of our journey became the very places where:
- our faith deepened
- our compassion grew
- our calling developed
- our dependence on God strengthened
- our testimony was formed
The painful chapters were not wasted chapters…in fact, quite the opposite.
Psalm 116 carries such a beautiful honesty about suffering and deliverance. The psalmist openly speaks of distress, sorrow, and trouble, yet continues returning to gratitude because God remained faithful through it all.
I think sometimes we accidentally believe trusting God means pretending everything is easy. But biblical trust is often choosing to keep walking with Him while fully aware life is hard.
And Proverbs 15:21 says:
“Foolishness brings joy to those with no sense; a sensible person stays on the right path.” (NLT)
There is wisdom in staying steady with God instead of reacting emotionally every time life becomes difficult or confusing. The enemy often tempts people to abandon trust the moment the story becomes painful. But God sees the full picture we cannot yet see.
Not everything we face is easy.
But God is still writing your story.
And somehow, through His grace, even the difficult chapters can eventually become places that glorify both Him and the work He accomplished within us.
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with God today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally today?”
- Write down what He reveals but His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
- Write down what He reveals to you – then do it!
In hard moments, instead of asking only, “Why is this happening?” spend time asking, “Lord, what are You developing in me through this?” Invite Him to help you trust His guidance even when you do not fully understand the process.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being faithful through every part of our story — even the painful and confusing seasons. Help me trust You when life feels difficult, delayed, or uncertain. Teach me not to lean only on my own understanding, but to recognize Your hand even in the middle of hardship. Strengthen my faith to keep following Your voice when I cannot yet see the full picture. Remind me that no season is wasted in Your hands, and that You are able to bring beauty, growth, healing, and testimony from every chapter of life. Thank You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
