Restored or Destroyed
Most destruction in life does not happen all at once. Usually it happens slowly, quietly, bit by bit.
A compromise here.
A wrong influence there.
A little bitterness left unchecked.
A little less prayer.
A little more conformity to the world.
A little more distance from God.
And before long, people can look up and barely recognize who they have become.
The Lord warned me today in this Gem of Knowledge,
“Be careful of who you are conforming to. So many try to steal you away. Bit by bit you can be destroyed or restored. I will restore what was taken if you will let Me.”
That last part carries so much hope:
I will restore what was taken if you will let Me.
God is not intimidated by how far someone has drifted.
He is not afraid of brokenness.
He specializes in restoration.
But we must be careful about what — and who — is shaping us along the way.
In today’s reading, we see David living among the Philistines after years of fear, exhaustion, and running. Even though David still belonged to God, he had slowly drifted into dangerous compromise and unhealthy alignment. By the time we reach 1 Samuel 29, David is literally preparing to march into battle alongside the enemies of Israel.
Think about how gradual that happened.
David did not wake up one morning intending to stand among the Philistines. It happened little by little through hurt, fear, pressure, survival mode, discouragement, and prolonged weariness.
And honestly, many believers experience the same thing spiritually.
Rarely does someone suddenly abandon their convictions overnight. More often, they slowly conform to the voices, environments, relationships, influences, entertainment, mindsets, or compromises surrounding them until what once felt wrong no longer feels troubling at all.
The enemy often works subtly because subtle compromise is easier to justify.
John 12 gives us a beautiful contrast through Mary. While others were focused on appearances, opinions, power, and public perception, Mary remained deeply surrendered at the feet of Jesus. She poured out expensive perfume in complete devotion while others criticized and misunderstood her worship.
One heart was slowly conforming to the world.
Another heart was being transformed through intimacy with Jesus.
And the truth is, we are always becoming more like whatever we spend the most time surrounding ourselves with.
Psalm 118 reminds us again and again:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” (NLT)
No matter what we have done His faithful love still reaches for us.
What an incredible comfort.
Sometimes restoration begins with simply recognizing where subtle compromise has slowly crept in. Maybe it is through unhealthy relationships, constant negativity, fear, pride, comparison, worldly validation, entertainment that dulls conviction, or environments that slowly pull us away from intimacy with God.
Bit by bit, those things shape us.
But restoration also happens bit by bit.
Prayer by prayer.
Choice by choice.
Surrender by surrender.
Day by day in His presence.
When David turned his attention and devotion back to God, everything the enemy had taken was restored, and he walked in complete victory again.
“David got back everything the Amalekites had taken… Nothing was missing, small or great… David brought everything back.” — 1 Samuel 30:18–19 (NLT)
What a beautiful reminder that no matter how far we drift, compromise, or lose our way, God is still able to restore what the enemy tried to destroy if we return fully to Him.
If we will let Him…💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take time to be with the Lord today, even if only 5 minutes. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally today?”
- Write down what He reveals through His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Write down what He reveals – then do it!
Ask the Lord to reveal any influences slowly pulling your heart away from Him, and invite Him to restore the places where compromise or disconnection may have taken root so He can restore them.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being ever-present, even when I drift. Thank You for always chasing after me because You love me so much. Help me recognize the subtle ways the world tries to shape and influence my heart. Give me wisdom to guard what I allow into my mind, spirit, and life. Forgive me for the places where compromise, fear, distraction, or unhealthy influence have slowly pulled me away from deeper intimacy with You. Thank You that You are not only a God who convicts, but also a God who restores. Rebuild the places in me that have become weary, damaged, hardened, or compromised. Shape me more into Your image day by day, and help me stay surrendered at Your feet like Mary. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
