Don’t Take Today for Granted

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: 2 Samuel 7:1–8:18, John 14:15–31, Psalm 119:33–48, Proverbs 15:33

Seize the Day

It is so easy to move through life on autopilot.

We wake up thinking about responsibilities, pressures, unfinished tasks, worries about tomorrow, regrets from yesterday, or everything still left undone. Before we know it, entire days pass by without us ever slowing down long enough to recognize the goodness God placed right in front of us.

But today’s Gem of Knowledge says:

“Today is a new day. Don’t take it for granted. Let me show you my goodness in it, then seize the day. You will be glad in it.”

Every single day is a gift from God.

Not every day will be easy, comfortable, exciting, or problem-free, but every day still carries moments of His goodness if we are willing to notice them. Sometimes His goodness appears in dramatic answers to prayer, but often it is found in much quieter places like a conversation, a moment of peace, strength to keep going, unexpected provision, or laughter.

So often we postpone joy while waiting for some future moment when life finally feels easier or more complete. But God continually reminds us that life is happening right now. The people around us matter right now. The opportunities before us matter right now.

And honestly, tomorrow is never promised.

In today’s reading from John 14, Jesus tells His disciples:

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.” (NLT)

I love that Jesus describes peace as a gift. That means we do not have to force ourselves to squeeze meaning, purpose, or stability out of life on our own. We can receive from Him daily. His presence changes how we walk through ordinary moments because we begin recognizing we are not walking through them alone.

In 2 Samuel 7, David desires to build a house for God, but instead God begins unfolding promises David never expected. David starts the chapter focused on what he wants to do for God, but ends overwhelmed by what God desires to do for him.

That really stood out to me.

Sometimes we become so focused on our plans, worries, routines, or goals that we fail to notice the goodness, grace, and opportunities God is already unfolding in front of us.

Psalm 119:37 says:

“Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.” (NLT)

What a needed prayer for our generation.

There are so many distractions constantly competing for our attention that we can accidentally spend entire days consumed with things that leave our hearts empty while missing the life God is offering us in the present moment.

And Proverbs 15:33 says:

“Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.” (NLT)

Part of wisdom is learning to recognize the value of the day we have been given.

Not every season lasts forever.
Not every opportunity returns.
Not every person remains.
Not every moment repeats itself.

So today, slow down long enough to notice God’s goodness in the middle of your ordinary life.

Let Him show you the beauty, purpose, people, lessons, opportunities, and blessings hidden within this very day.

Then seize it with gratitude.

You may look back someday and realize what felt like an ordinary day was actually filled with holy moments all along. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Ask God to help you recognize His goodness throughout your day today instead of rushing through it distracted or overwhelmed. Be intentional about noticing moments of peace, provision, beauty, encouragement, or opportunities He places in front of you.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of today. Forgive me for the times I rush through life distracted, anxious, or focused only on what is missing instead of recognizing Your goodness around me. Open my eyes to see the blessings, opportunities, and holy moments You place within this day. Help me walk with gratitude, peace, wisdom, and purpose instead of taking the time You have given me for granted. Teach me to live fully present with You and to seize each day with joy and thankfulness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
