Today’s One Year Bible Verses: 1 Kings 1:1–53, Acts 4:1–37, Psalm 124:1–8, Proverbs 16:24
Following God’s Lead
A few years ago, my husband and I visited a place neither of us had ever been before. Like most people these days, we pulled out our phones, looked at a map, and started exploring on our own. We found a few interesting things, took some pictures, and enjoyed ourselves. But later we discovered there were entire sections of the area we had missed—beautiful viewpoints, historical details, hidden trails, and fascinating stories we never would have known existed.
It reminded me of the difference between taking a self-guided tour and having an actual tour guide.
A self-guided tour can get you where you’re going. You may see some interesting things along the way. But you also leave plenty of room for wrong turns, missed details, misunderstandings, and treasures that remain undiscovered simply because you didn’t know where to look.
This morning, the Holy Spirit whispered this Gem of Knowledge to me:
“Self-guided tours leave room for error and wandering, with many secrets and details never revealed or discovered. But with a Tour Guide, you are led the right way and revealed all knowledge and secrets. Amen.”
Immediately, I thought about how many people approach life this way.
We invite God into our plans, but often only after we’ve already decided where we’re going.
We ask Him to bless our route instead of asking Him to lead it.
We consult Him occasionally, but then continue navigating according to our own understanding, unaware that we may be missing countless treasures, lessons, details, and beautiful mysteries He wanted to reveal along the way.
In other words, we hire God as a consultant when He desires to be our private Tour Guide.
Today’s reading in 1 Kings opens during a critical transition in Israel’s history. David is nearing the end of his life, and suddenly multiple people begin positioning themselves for power. Adonijah decides he will become king and begins gathering support around himself. On the surface, his plan looked reasonable. He had influence, resources, and people willing to follow him.
The problem was simple:
God had already chosen a different path.
Adonijah was conducting a self-guided tour.
Solomon, however, was walking the route God had designed.
One path seemed logical. The other was divinely appointed.
And in the end, God’s plan prevailed.
As I read through Acts 4, I noticed the same principle. Peter and John were not making up their ministry as they went. They were following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Because they were walking with God’s guidance, they found themselves accomplishing things far beyond their own wisdom or ability. Even the religious leaders were astonished by them.
God’s guidance did not always lead them to comfort. It led them to truth and miracles.
Sometimes God’s route takes us through places we would never choose ourselves. Yet He sees the entire landscape while we only see the next turn.
That is why a guide is so valuable.
A guide knows what lies ahead.
A guide sees dangers before you encounter them.
A guide knows where the hidden treasures are.
A guide understands the purpose behind the journey.
Psalm 124 captures this beautifully. The psalmist reflects on God’s protection and recognizes that without Him, they would have been overwhelmed. How many dangers has God quietly guided us around that we never even knew existed?
How many blessings have we experienced because we followed His direction rather than our own?
And then Proverbs 16:24 reminds us:
“Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” (NLT)
I found myself smiling at that verse because God’s guidance is often like that. His words bring life. They nourish the soul. They strengthen us for the journey ahead.
The older I get, the less interested I am in being my own guide.
I’ve taken enough wrong turns to know I don’t see as clearly as I think I do.
I’ve missed enough details to know there is always more God wants to show me.
And I’ve discovered that some of life’s greatest treasures were never found because I searched harder, but because I followed closer.
Perhaps faith is not learning how to navigate life independently – perhaps faith is staying with the Tour Guide so we never lose sight of Him.
Because when God leads the tour, nothing important is missed. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take at least 5 minutes to find the Tour Guide, Jesus. Ask Him,
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this?”
- Journal what He gives you by His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He gives you – then do it!
Surrender the map back to Him and invite Him to guide your next steps.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being my Guide. Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own understanding instead of seeking Your direction. Help me stay close to You and trust where You lead, even when I cannot see the entire path ahead. Open my eyes to the treasures, lessons, and blessings You want to reveal along the way. Teach me to follow Your voice above all others and to walk confidently wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
