See Beyond the Surface

How quickly we can make assumptions about people.

We see someone who is impatient and think they’re rude. We meet someone who seems distant and assume they don’t care. Someone lashes out, and we conclude they’re simply mean or difficult.

But what if we’re only seeing the surface?

In today’s Gem of Knowledge, the Lord gently reminds us,

“Be compassionate and loving to everyone. You don’t know all they battle, the enemy that torments them, and the pain they carry. Always show loving kindness, mercy, and grace. Like Me. Amen.”

Those words invite us to pause before we judge and to remember that every person we encounter is fighting battles we may never see.

When we read the list in 1 Chronicles, we see courageous men who accomplished incredible feats. They became David’s elite warriors—men remembered throughout history for their bravery and loyalty. But they didn’t all begin that way.

Years earlier, many of these same men came to David while he was hiding from Saul. They were men who had been rejected, misunderstood, discouraged, and living difficult lives. Others had spent years in conflict, uncertainty, and hardship. Most people would have looked at them and seen nothing remarkable. David looked beyond their circumstances and saw their potential.

He accepted them. He led them. He encouraged them. Most importantly, he pointed them toward the Lord.

Over time, God transformed these forgotten, struggling men into some of Israel’s greatest heroes.

Isn’t that exactly what Jesus has done for us?

Before Christ, every one of us carried something that separated us from God. Some carried shame. Some carried fear. Others carried anger, addiction, pride, or deep wounds left by the sins of others. Yet Jesus didn’t turn away because of what He saw. He looked beyond our brokenness and loved us anyway.

That same compassion is seen again in today’s reading from Acts. Paul and the others had just survived one of the most terrifying storms imaginable. They arrived on the island of Malta cold, exhausted, soaked, and with absolutely nothing. The islanders knew nothing about these strangers, yet Scripture says they “showed us unusual kindness.” They built a fire, welcomed them, and cared for them simply because they saw people in need.

I wonder how different our world would look if we chose to see people the way David did…the way the people of Malta did…and most importantly, the way Jesus does.

What if the angry person isn’t angry at all, but exhausted?

What if the impatient person is carrying unbearable grief?

What if the person who seems cold has spent years building walls because they’ve been hurt too many times?

What if the difficult person is quietly fighting spiritual battles that no one else can see?

The Lord knows every burden they carry.

David reminds us in Psalm 9 that “The LORD is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.” As followers of Christ, we have the privilege of reflecting that same heart to others. We cannot heal every wound or solve every problem, but we can choose to become people who offer encouragement instead of criticism, patience instead of frustration, and grace instead of judgment.

That’s real wisdom. In fact, Proverbs tells us that integrity is far more valuable than appearances. God is far more interested in the condition of our hearts than in our opinions about someone else’s.

The next time someone tests your patience, pause before reacting. Ask the Lord to help you see beyond what is obvious. You may never know the pain they’re carrying, the spiritual battles they’re fighting, or the reasons they struggle the way they do.

But you can always choose compassion.

After all, that’s exactly what Jesus chose for you.

You may never fully know what someone is carrying. But you can choose to lighten their load instead of adding to it. Let your words heal instead of wound. Let your actions reflect the kindness of Christ.

Because sometimes the greatest sermon we preach is simply the way we love people. 💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

• “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
  • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
• Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
  • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Let the Lord reveal your own personal revelation on this today. Then as you walk throughout your day, before reacting to someone’s words or actions today, pause and ask yourself, “What battle might they be fighting that I cannot see?” Then choose to respond with the same compassion, mercy, and grace that Jesus continually shows you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the endless mercy and grace You have shown me. Forgive me for the times I have judged others without knowing their struggles. Help me to see people through Your eyes. Fill my heart with compassion, my words with kindness, and my actions with love. Make me a refuge for the hurting and a reflection of Your grace wherever I go. May others experience Your love through me today. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
