Listen To Learn

Have you ever noticed that the loudest person in the room isn’t always the wisest?

Sometimes we are so busy preparing our response that we never truly hear what is being said. We interrupt, assume, defend ourselves, or rush to fill the silence. Yet God often accomplishes some of His greatest work through those who take the time to quietly observe and carefully listen.

As I spent time with the Lord, He gently impressed this Gem of Knowledge upon my heart:

“Speak less, listen more. The enemy will reveal himself if you give him the opportunity to speak. Try listening more. Listen to learn.”

Wow. “Listen to learn.” That was a powerful reminder for me.

Listening isn’t just about hearing words. It’s about gaining understanding. When we slow down long enough to truly listen, people often reveal what is in their hearts. Jesus taught that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Given enough time, a person’s words will eventually expose their motives, priorities, wisdom, or lack thereof.

We see this principle reflected in today’s reading from 2 Chronicles. King Asa began his reign by seeking the Lord wholeheartedly. When a vast Ethiopian army marched against Judah, Asa didn’t rely on his own strength or persuasive words. Instead, he cried out to God, and the Lord delivered him. Later, when Asa listened to God’s prophet, he courageously removed idols from the land and renewed the people’s covenant with the Lord.

But years later, something changed. When another crisis arose, Asa stopped seeking God’s counsel and relied on a political alliance instead. When the prophet Hanani confronted him, Asa refused to listen. Instead of humbling himself, he became angry and imprisoned the messenger.

The difference wasn’t simply what Asa said—it was whom he chose to listen to.

Romans 9 reminds us that God’s wisdom is infinitely higher than our own. We don’t always understand His ways, but we are called to trust Him. That requires listening. Not merely hearing Scripture with our ears, but allowing it to shape our hearts. The Holy Spirit faithfully speaks to those who make room to hear His voice.

Listening also helps us navigate relationships. People often tell us exactly who they are if we are patient enough to pay attention. A manipulative person eventually reveals manipulation. A prideful heart eventually boasts. A humble person consistently points others toward God. We don’t have to rush to conclusions or become suspicious of everyone. We simply need to slow down, observe, pray, and ask the Holy Spirit for discernment.

David beautifully captures this posture in Psalm 19. After declaring that creation itself speaks of God’s glory, he turns his attention inward and prays, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O LORD.” Before asking God to bless his words, David first spent time meditating on the Word…he listened to what God was saying and learned from it as he meditated on it with the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps we would avoid many unnecessary arguments, disappointments, and regrets if we spent less time trying to be heard and more time seeking to understand.

Listening isn’t weakness.

It is wisdom.

It creates room for God to speak, for truth to become evident, and for discernment to grow.💎

Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

• “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
  • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
• Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
  • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Let today be a day of listening more. Listen to learn.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for being a God who patiently teaches and guides me. Forgive me for the times I’ve been quick to speak but slow to listen. Help me to quiet my heart so I can hear Your voice more clearly. Give me discernment to recognize truth from deception and wisdom to learn from what others reveal through their words. May my speech honor You, and may my listening increase and draw me closer to Your heart. In Your mighty name I pray, Amen.
