Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 2:31–4:18 | Colossians 1:1–17 | Psalm 76:1–12 | Proverbs 24:21–22
Just for Fun?
This weekend we’re in Branson with our granddaughters to see David at Sight & Sound. Branson is filled with family attractions, shows, restaurants, and all kinds of entertainment. But among all of it is a huge sign I’ve seen many times advertising palm reading.
It’s interesting how easily something like that can blend right in with everything else. Wouldn’t that be fun? Let’s see what they say! We could walk through that door out of simple curiosity, thinking it’s nothing more than entertainment.
Fortune-telling and other occult practices have become so normalized that they’re often presented exactly that way—just for fun. Horoscopes, psychic readings, tarot cards, mediums, and palm readings can seem like harmless curiosity.
But not everything presented as entertainment is harmless.
Calling something “just for fun” doesn’t change the spiritual source we’re choosing to consult.
That’s why today’s Gem came with such a strong warning:
“Fortune tellers are all lying deceivers who have been deceived and now walk under the control of the enemy. Never let them into your life. Never. Amen.”
Something stood out to me in those words: the people involved have also been deceived.
That matters. Our battle isn’t against them. We aren’t called to hate or ridicule people involved in these practices. We should pray for them and desire their freedom. But having compassion for someone doesn’t mean we participate in what they’re doing.
Throughout Scripture, God warns His people against seeking supernatural knowledge or guidance apart from Him. Today’s reading in Jeremiah helps us understand why:
“For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me—the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!”
—Jeremiah 2:13 NLT
God’s people had access to the fountain, yet they were searching somewhere else for what only He could provide.
We can be tempted to do the same thing.
We want to know what’s coming. We want reassurance about relationships, finances, health, decisions, or our future. Uncertainty is uncomfortable, so something promising hidden knowledge can sound appealing.
But God doesn’t promise to tell us everything about tomorrow.
He asks us to trust Him with it.
That’s why fortune-telling is more than harmless curiosity. It seeks spiritual knowledge from a source God has told us not to seek.
And we don’t need another spiritual source. This just opens us up to the enemy’s trap.
Today’s reading in Colossians tells us that Jesus created everything in heaven and on earth and then says:
“He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.”
—Colossians 1:17 NLT
Think about that. If Jesus holds all creation together, why would I entrust my future to anyone else?
He already knows tomorrow. He knows what I can’t see, what’s coming around the corner, and exactly what I’ll need when I get there.
That doesn’t mean we can’t seek wise counsel, research our options, or make plans. It means we don’t need forbidden spiritual shortcuts to make us feel secure.
Perhaps that’s why today’s Gem is so emphatic:
“Never let them into your life. Never.”
Some doors simply don’t need to be opened.
And if you’ve opened one before, don’t respond with fear. Maybe you’ve visited a psychic, had your cards read, consulted a horoscope for guidance, or participated in something you didn’t understand at the time. Bring it to Jesus. Acknowledge it, turn away from it, and ask Him to remove its influence from your life.
You don’t have to live terrified of the enemy when you belong to Christ. Close the door and follow Jesus.
Proverbs 24:21 says, “My child, fear the LORD…” Our security isn’t found in any other places but Him.
You don’t need a fortune teller to tell you your future. You need Jesus to lead you into it. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
- Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He reveals – then do it!
Ask God whether you’ve allowed any spiritual source into your life that competes with your dependence on Him. If He brings something to mind, turn away from it and remove it without fear. Then choose to trust Him with the things about tomorrow that you cannot know today.
Prayer
Jesus, You know my future completely, and I choose to trust You with what I cannot see. Give me discernment to recognize spiritual deception and courage to close every door that doesn’t belong in my life. Forgive me for looking anywhere other than You for spiritual guidance or security. Lead me by Your Word and Holy Spirit, and help me rest in knowing that You already know every tomorrow I will ever face. In Jesus’ name, amen.
