Today’s One Year Bible Reading: Ezekiel 18:1–19:14, Hebrews 9:1–10, Psalm 106:32–48, Proverbs 27:10
Don’t Miss Your Assignment
At 2:40 this morning, the Lord woke me up with some very clear instructions. He showed me things I needed to stop doing for a while, things I needed to finish, and priorities I needed to rearrange. He also gave me a promise concerning the results I’ve been hoping for, but there was a condition attached: I needed to be obedient to His instructions.
Then He gave me today’s Gem of Knowledge:
“Do better with the things you know you should do, but aren’t doing because you let the busyness of life get in the way. I will help you. Amen.”
Ouch! But also, thank You, Jesus! Because I knew exactly what He was talking about.
The truth is, I’ve been incredibly busy. And much of what I’ve been doing is good, productive, and even ministry-related. I’ve made progress, accomplished things, and worked hard toward the goals He’s placed on my heart. But this morning, He helped me recognize that I’ve allowed other activities and responsibilities to take priority over some of the very things He’s specifically instructed me to do.
And there’s a difference between being productive and being obedient.
Sometimes we get so caught up doing what we think needs to be done that we neglect what God has actually asked us to do. We make our plans, organize our schedules, and work diligently, but somewhere along the way, we begin following our own methods instead of His instructions.
In today’s reading, God speaks through Ezekiel about the importance of personal responsibility and turning from the things that lead us away from Him.
“Repent, and turn from your sins. Don’t let them destroy you!” — Ezekiel 18:30 (NLT)
Now, not every distraction is sinful, and being busy isn’t necessarily wrong. But when we recognize that something is interfering with our obedience to God, we have a responsibility to make a change.
Ezekiel 18 reminds us that God doesn’t want us remaining stuck in yesterday’s choices. He invites us to turn, realign our lives with His ways, and move forward.
Psalm 106 tells a similar story. The Israelites repeatedly witnessed God’s faithfulness, yet they continued to wander from His instructions. They allowed their desires, circumstances, and the influence of those around them to pull them away from His guidance.
And honestly, isn’t that easy to do? We know God is faithful. We’ve experienced His goodness. Yet sometimes we still insist on figuring things out our own way!
Hebrews 9 describes the old covenant’s system of worship, with its regulations, sacrifices, and earthly sanctuary. These outward practices pointed toward something greater that God would accomplish through Jesus Christ. They remind us that outward religious activity, by itself, cannot accomplish the inward transformation we need.
And that made me think about how easy it is to fill our lives with Christian activities while neglecting the personal instructions God has given us.
Are you so busy doing good hat you’re neglecting the very calling God has placed on your life?
We can be doing wonderful things for God while overlooking the very things He’s asking us to do with Him.
This morning, I realized that although I’ve made progress doing things my way, I haven’t experienced the fullness of what I believe God intends because I haven’t consistently followed His direction.
He has given me a lot to accomplish, I’ll admit! But He never asked me to do it alone. In fact, the most encouraging part of today’s Gem was His simple promise: “I will help you.”
What a relief! God isn’t demanding that we figure everything out through our own strength. He’s inviting us to cooperate with Him, trust His wisdom, and follow His lead.
And perhaps that’s the question we should all ask ourselves today: Am I simply staying busy, or am I being obedient?
Because sometimes moving forward requires us to stop doing certain things, even good things, so we can give our attention to what God has actually called us to do.
Progress is wonderful, but obedience is what keeps us moving in the direction God intends. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
- Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He reveals – then do it!
Ask the Lord to reveal anything you’ve allowed to interfere with His instructions for your life. Is there something He’s asked you to finish, begin, or set aside? Write it down, rearrange your priorities, and take one intentional step toward obedience today. Remember, He has promised to help you!
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for loving me enough to correct my course when I begin following my own plans instead of Yours. Forgive me for allowing distractions and busyness to interfere with the things You’ve asked me to do. Help me recognize the difference between being productive and being obedient. Give me the discipline to set aside what isn’t necessary, the courage to finish what You’ve placed before me, and the wisdom to follow Your instructions rather than my own understanding. Thank You for reminding me that I don’t have to accomplish any of this alone. I trust You to guide me, strengthen me, and help me fulfill Your purposes. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
