Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 16:16–18:23 | 1 Thessalonians 4:1–5:3 | Psalm 81:1–16 | Proverbs 25:6–8

Accepted With Open Arms

Have you ever done something you were so ashamed of that you wondered if God could really forgive you? Maybe it was something from years ago, or perhaps it’s something you’re still struggling with today. You know what Scripture says about God’s mercy, but somewhere deep inside, you wonder whether that mercy truly extends to you.

I believe the enemy loves to use our past against us. He reminds us of our failures, whispers accusations, and tries to convince us that we’ve disappointed God one too many times. Sometimes we become so focused on what we’ve done that we forget who God is.

But listen to the beautiful reassurance the Holy Spirit gave me in today’s Gem of Knowledge:

“I will forgive all who come to Me with a contrite heart. Never fear your past and never fear rejection from Me. I will never reject the faithful. Amen.”

Never fear your past, and never fear rejection from God.

Those words are especially meaningful when we consider what we’ve been reading in Jeremiah. God’s people repeatedly turned away from Him, ignored His warnings, and pursued things that separated them from His presence. Yet even in the midst of His correction, we see His desire for His people to turn back to Him.

In Jeremiah 18, God explains that when He announces judgment against a nation, if that nation turns from its evil ways, He will reconsider the disaster He had planned. His warning wasn’t simply an announcement of punishment. It was also an opportunity to repent.

God’s correction is an invitation to return to Him.

And that’s something we need to remember when the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin. Conviction is not the same as condemnation. Conviction reveals what needs to change and draws us toward repentance. Condemnation tells us we’re beyond hope and should hide from God.

But hiding is the last thing we should do!

Psalm 51:17 tells us that God will not reject a broken and repentant heart. He isn’t asking us to pretend we haven’t sinned or to somehow make ourselves worthy of His forgiveness. He wants us to come to Him with genuine repentance and a willingness to change.

Think about the difference between someone who is simply sorry they got caught and someone who is truly grieved because they’ve hurt someone they love. A contrite heart isn’t just concerned about consequences. It recognizes the wrong, desires reconciliation, and wants to walk differently.

That’s the kind of heart God welcomes.

In today’s reading, 1 Thessalonians 4:1 encourages us to live in a way that pleases God and to continue growing in that obedience. Following Jesus doesn’t mean we’ll never make another mistake. It means we continually surrender our hearts to Him, allowing His love and truth to transform us.

And Psalm 81 reminds us how deeply God desires His people to listen to Him. He longs to lead them into the goodness He has prepared for them, but they must be willing to follow.

Maybe you’ve been carrying guilt over something God has already forgiven. Or perhaps there’s something you haven’t brought before Him because you’re afraid of what He might think.

He already knows. And He’s inviting you to come anyway.

You don’t have to clean yourself up before approaching Jesus. Come with an honest, repentant heart and allow Him to do the cleansing.

Your past doesn’t have to define your future, and your failures don’t have to keep you separated from the One who loves you.

Don’t run from the very One who can restore you. Run to Him.

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

  • “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
    • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Is there something from your past that still causes you shame or makes you feel unworthy of God’s love? Bring it honestly before Him today. If you need to repent, do so with a sincere heart. If you’ve already repented, stop allowing guilt to convince you that God has rejected you. Receive His forgiveness, thank Him for His mercy, and choose to walk forward in the freedom He offers.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for Your mercy and Your willingness to forgive those who sincerely turn to You. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed shame, guilt, or fear to keep me from drawing close to You. Search my heart and reveal anything I need to surrender. Give me a contrite spirit that welcomes Your correction and a faithful heart that desires to please You. Help me leave my past in Your hands and walk forward in the freedom of Your forgiveness. Thank You for never turning away those who genuinely seek You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
