Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 23:21–25:38 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1–17 | Psalm 84:1–12 | Proverbs 25:15
Walking Faithfully with Jesus
Have you ever had those days when you don’t want to do anything? You just want to sleep or curl up and read a book, just to find some rest, peace, and quiet. If given the opportunity, I would do this every day. I could so easily slip into laziness and complacency if it weren’t for all the demands I feel are upon me.
Then I think about God… What if He became lazy or complacent? What if He decided to just take the day off? Where would that leave us?
Thankfully, that’s something we never have to worry about! God doesn’t become distracted, lose interest, or grow weary of fulfilling His promises. He is faithful, steadfast, and intentional in everything He does. His love and commitment to us never waver.
But what about our commitment to Him?
The Holy Spirit speaks to this in today’s Gem of Knowledge:
“Vigilance is a conscious decision and awareness of self with a dedication to what you believe and hold on to. I pray you are vigilant in your faith as I am vigilant in bringing life and salvation. Amen.”
Vigilance requires intentionality. It means being watchful, attentive, and aware of what’s happening around us and within us. It’s not about never taking a break or allowing ourselves time to rest. Even God established a day of rest! Rather, it’s about recognizing the difference between resting in God and becoming complacent toward God.
In today’s reading from 2 Thessalonians 2, Paul warns believers not to be easily shaken or deceived by false teachings. He reminds them that deception is a real danger and encourages them to remain steadfast in their faith.
“With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter.” —2 Thessalonians 2:15 NLT
I love that phrase, “keep a strong grip.” It reminds me that our faith isn’t something we should casually carry around, setting it aside whenever something else demands our attention. It’s something we deliberately hold on to, nurture, and protect.
Jeremiah 23 offers another sobering reminder. God confronts false prophets who claimed to speak for Him but were actually speaking from their own imaginations. Their messages sounded reassuring, but they weren’t rooted in God’s truth. Instead of leading people toward repentance and obedience, they encouraged them to continue in their wrongdoing.
This is why spiritual vigilance matters. Not everything that sounds good is from God. Not every comforting message is His truth. We must know His Word, recognize His character, and continually seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance so we can discern what is genuinely from Him.
But something else in today’s Gem particularly touches my heart.
“I pray you are vigilant in your faith as I am vigilant in bringing life and salvation.”
Think about that. God is unwavering in His purpose to bring life and salvation through Jesus Christ. He doesn’t lose sight of His promises or abandon His purposes. His faithfulness is constant, and He desires that same steadfast dedication from us.
Psalm 84 beautifully describes a heart that longs for God’s presence:
“A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else!” —Psalm 84:10 NLT
That’s the kind of heart I want to have! One that treasures God’s presence so deeply that nothing this world offers can compare.
And perhaps that’s the difference between spiritual complacency and vigilance. It’s not about how busy we are or how much we accomplish for God. It’s about being so in love with Him that we want to remain close, listen for His voice, protect our relationship with Him, and hold tightly to His truth. Not because we have to, but because He means that much to us.
There will be days when we’re tired and need to rest. There will be seasons when life feels overwhelming and we need to slow down. That’s okay! God never intended for us to live in constant exhaustion. But even in our resting, we can remain faithful, connected, and attentive to Him.
We may need to take a day off from our work, but we should never take a day off from God. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take some time to be with the Lord today, even if its just 5 minutes. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
- Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He reveals – then do it!
Take a moment today to examine your spiritual vigilance. Are you consciously nurturing your relationship with Jesus, or have you allowed complacency or distractions to weaken your focus? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that needs your attention. Then make an intentional decision to remain steadfast in your faith, whether you’re working, resting, or simply going about your day.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unwavering faithfulness and Your dedication to bringing life and salvation through Jesus Christ. Thank You that You never abandon Your promises or lose sight of Your purposes. Forgive me for the times I’ve become spiritually complacent or allowed distractions to pull my attention away from You. Help me recognize when I need physical rest and when I need spiritual renewal. Teach me to remain vigilant, discerning, and firmly rooted in Your truth. May I always treasure Your presence and remain faithful to You, just as You are faithful to me. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.
