Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 22:1–23:20 | 2 Thessalonians 1:1–12 | Psalm 83:1–18 | Proverbs 25:11–14
Jesus Intercedes for Us
There is a promise in Scripture that has been an anchor for me through so many seasons of life. In times of uncertainty, difficulty, loneliness, and even fear, I’ve returned to these words again and again: “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV)
What a beautiful assurance! No matter what happens around us, no matter how difficult life becomes, we can trust that God will never abandon us. His faithfulness isn’t dependent on our circumstances, our emotions, or even our ability to understand what He’s doing.
But when the Holy Spirit gave me today’s Gem of Knowledge, something caught my attention that I hadn’t really considered in quite this way before. He whispered:
“I will never leave you. I pray you will never leave Me. Amen.”
Wait a minute. The Lord prays?
We spend so much time thinking about our prayers to God that we can easily overlook the fact that Jesus prays for us!
Hebrews 7:25 tells us that Jesus lives forever to intercede with God on behalf of those who come to Him. Think about that for a moment. Our Savior isn’t simply waiting in heaven for us to finish our journey here on earth. He is actively interceding for us!
And when we look at John 17, we get a beautiful glimpse into what is on His heart. Jesus prayed for His disciples, asking the Father to protect them, keep them united, and preserve them from the evil one. He even prayed for those who would come to believe in Him through their message. That includes us!
Suddenly, the second part of today’s Gem feels even more precious.
“I pray you will never leave Me.”
God has already made His commitment to us clear. He will never abandon us. But He also desires that we remain faithful to Him, choosing to stay close even when life becomes difficult or distractions begin pulling us in other directions.
We’ve seen the heartbreaking consequences of turning away from God throughout our readings in Jeremiah. Again and again, His people rejected His instructions and followed their own desires. In Jeremiah 23, God confronts the leaders who had scattered His flock rather than caring for them.
Yet even in the midst of these warnings, He promises to gather His people and provide shepherds who will care for them. He also speaks of a coming righteous King from David’s line, pointing us toward Jesus, our faithful Shepherd.
What a contrast! People may wander, leaders may fail, and circumstances may change, but Jesus remains faithful.
Today’s reading in 2 Thessalonians 1:11 also connects beautifully with this truth. Paul tells the believers that he continually prays for God to enable them to live lives worthy of His calling and to accomplish the good things their faith prompts them to do.
Prayer isn’t simply about asking God to make our lives easier. It’s also about asking Him to strengthen us so that we remain faithful and fulfill the purposes He has for us.
And here’s what touches my heart most about today’s Gem: The One who promises never to leave us also desires that we never leave Him.
He wants our love, our faithfulness, and our companionship. Not because He needs something we can provide, but because He loves us and desires an ongoing relationship with us.
Perhaps you’ve been walking through a difficult season and wondering whether God is still with you. Let His promise settle that question in your heart. He hasn’t left you.
Or maybe you’ve become distracted, distant, or spiritually complacent. Hear the tenderness in His invitation to remain close.
Jesus knows our weaknesses, our struggles, and the temptations we face. And Scripture assures us that He continues to intercede for those who belong to Him.
He is faithful to us. May we choose to remain faithful to Him. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take at least 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
- Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He reveals – then do it!
Thank Jesus for His promise never to leave you and for His ongoing intercession on your behalf. Then consider your own faithfulness to Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen your commitment to Jesus and help you remain close to Him in every season.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for Your unwavering faithfulness and Your promise never to abandon me. It humbles me to know that You intercede for me and desire that I remain close to You. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed distractions or difficulties to pull my attention away from You. Strengthen my faith, guard my heart, and help me remain steadfast in my love and devotion to You. I never want to take Your presence for granted. Thank You for loving me so completely. May I always choose You, just as You have faithfully chosen to love me. In Your precious name I pray, amen.
