Jesus and a woman sit together on a rustic wooden bench beneath a grapevine arbor, smiling and enjoying a peaceful conversation as golden sunlight illuminates the vineyard.

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Jeremiah 19:1–21:14 | 1 Thessalonians 5:4–28 | Psalm 82:1–8 | Proverbs 25:9–10

Abiding With Jesus

Have you ever felt like you weren’t doing enough to be close to God? Maybe you haven’t spent as much time praying as you’d like, you’ve fallen behind in your Bible reading, or life has become so busy that your quiet time with Him keeps getting pushed aside. Before long, you begin feeling distant, and the thought of getting back to where you once were can seem overwhelming.

I think sometimes we make our relationship with God more complicated than He ever intended. We convince ourselves that we need to pray longer, study harder, or somehow become more spiritual before we can experience the closeness we desire. But what if drawing near to Him isn’t nearly as difficult as we’ve made it?

The Holy Spirit reminded me of this in today’s Gem of Knowledge:

“Closeness doesn’t require great effort. It only requires you to choose Me and want to be with Me. I will then come in and abide with you. Amen.”

I love the simplicity of that invitation. God isn’t asking us to perform for His attention or work ourselves into His presence. He’s asking us to choose Him and desire to be with Him.

Jesus said something beautiful in John 15:4:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” —John 15:4 NKJV

Think about that for a moment. A branch doesn’t have to struggle to receive nourishment from the vine. It simply needs to remain connected. As long as that connection is maintained, the vine supplies everything the branch needs to grow and produce fruit.

Our relationship with Jesus works much the same way. We don’t manufacture spiritual life through our own efforts. We receive it through our connection with Him.

And that connection isn’t meant to be limited to a few minutes in the morning or a church service on Sunday. Abiding means living in continual relationship with Him. It means inviting Him into our ordinary moments, acknowledging His presence throughout the day, and choosing to listen when He speaks.

Today’s reading in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 gives us a wonderful picture of what that looks like. Paul encourages believers to rejoice always, never stop praying, and be thankful in all circumstances.

Notice that he doesn’t tell us to spend every waking moment on our knees. He’s describing a life of ongoing fellowship with God, where prayer and gratitude become part of how we live.

We can talk to Him while driving, cooking dinner, working, or sitting quietly in the deer woods. We can thank Him for something beautiful, ask for His wisdom when making a decision, or simply pause to acknowledge that He’s with us.

And sometimes we don’t need to say anything at all. We can simply enjoy being in His presence.

In Jeremiah, we’ve been reading about people who repeatedly chose to turn away from God. Their hearts became hardened because they continually rejected His direction. What a contrast to the invitation Jesus gives us to abide in Him!

Closeness with God begins with a choice, but it’s a choice we continue making every day. Not out of obligation or fear, but because we love Him and genuinely want to be with Him.

And here’s something I find especially comforting: We don’t have to earn His willingness to be near us. He already desires that relationship.

So if you’ve been feeling distant from God, don’t let guilt convince you that you have a mountain to climb to get back to Him. Turn your heart toward Him today. Tell Him you love Him, that you want to know Him more, and that you desire His presence in your life.

You might be surprised how quickly that sense of distance begins to fade.

Closeness doesn’t begin with striving. It begins with choosing.💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

  • “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
    • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Choose to spend some intentional time with Jesus today, not because you have to, but because you want to. Put aside distractions, quiet your thoughts, and simply enjoy His presence. Throughout the day, look for opportunities to acknowledge Him, talk with Him, and listen for His voice. Remember, abiding isn’t another task on your to-do list. It’s a relationship to enjoy.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You that I don’t have to strive to earn Your presence or Your love. Forgive me for the times I’ve made our relationship more complicated than it needs to be. I choose You today, Lord, not out of obligation, but because I love You and want to be close to You. Teach me to abide in You throughout every part of my day. Help me recognize Your presence, hear Your voice, and enjoy the beautiful fellowship You desire to have with me. May my life bear fruit because I remain connected to You. In Your mighty name I pray, amen.
