Rest on Every Side

Today’s One Year Bible Verses: Joshua 22:1-22:20, Luke 20:1-26, Psalm 89:1-13, Proverbs 13:15-16

God’s Promised Rest

There are times when we don’t just feel tired physically—we feel worn down in every way. Our minds are full, our emotions are stretched, and even when we try to slow down, it can feel like something inside us is still running.

We made it through the battle, we received the portion of our blessing, yet we feel we must continue to push through, telling ourselves to keep going, to always handle what’s in front of us, to just get through the day. And while God does give us strength in those moments, this Gem of Knowledge reminds us that His heart is not only to sustain us—but to give us rest:

“Even when you are tired, I will be there to bless you and strengthen you. But I want to give you rest. Rest in Me, from all things physically and spiritually. I will be your rest. Amen.”

There is a difference between being strengthened to keep going and being invited to truly rest.

In Joshua, we see something powerful. Before anyone is released to return home, Scripture tells us:

“And the Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors.” (Joshua 21:43, NLT)

God fulfilled His promise. After all the battles, after the waiting, after the years of effort—He brought His people into rest.

Then in Joshua 22, we see what follows. The tribes who had faithfully gone ahead to help their brothers fight are finally released to return home. They had carried responsibility that wasn’t only their own. They had stood in battles that benefited others. And now, because the work was complete and the promise fulfilled, they were able to return to their own inheritance and enter into rest themselves.

There is something deeply reassuring in that order.

God does not forget what He has promised. He does not overlook faithfulness. And He does not keep His people in a place of striving forever. There is a completion to what He calls us to do, and there is a rest that follows.

And that is still His heart for us.

God does not call us to fight endlessly. There are seasons of labor, seasons of standing, and seasons of carrying weight—but there are also seasons where He brings us into rest. The work is not meant to continue without pause.

But even beyond physical rest, God is inviting us into deeper rest with Him.

In Luke 20, we see people questioning Jesus, challenging Him, trying to trap Him with their words. There is a tension there, a striving for control and understanding that comes from human effort. And yet Jesus remains steady. He is not shaken by their questions or caught up in their striving. There is a calm authority in Him.

That kind of rest doesn’t come from circumstances being easy. It comes from being fully anchored in the Father.

And that is what He is offering to us.

Rest in Him is not just stepping away from activity—it is releasing what we have been carrying internally. It is letting go of the need to control, to figure everything out, or to hold everything together on our own. It is trusting that He is present, that He is working, and that we don’t have to carry what was never meant to be ours.

Psalm 89 reminds us of the strength and faithfulness of God:

“Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.” (Psalm 89:13, NLT)

When we remember who He is, it becomes easier to release what we are holding. We begin to understand that rest is not something we have to create—it is something we enter into when we trust Him.

The invitation in this Gem is simple, but it requires a response. We can keep pushing, keep striving, and keep carrying everything ourselves… or we can come to Him and receive what He has already promised us.

Rest is not found in doing less alone—it is found in being with Him.💎

Action (5 Minutes Minutes with God)

Take time to intentionally pause and seek the Lord. Ask Him:

  • “What do You want to tell me about this personally?”
    • Write down what He reveals,
  • Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
    • Write down what He reveals – then do it!

Let Him show you how to find deeper rest in Him today.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You see when I am tired and that You don’t just give me strength to keep going—you invite me into rest. Forgive me for the times I have tried to carry everything on my own. Help me to release what was never mine to hold and to trust You with it. Teach me how to rest in You, not just physically, but in my mind and in my spirit. Remind me that You are with me, that You are strong, and that I am safe in Your hands. In Your beautiful name I pray – Jesus Christ, amen.
