Stop Reacting So Quickly

Over the past several days, I couldn’t help but notice the Lord repeating the same lesson in different ways. Maybe I’m just hard-headed. 😂 Or maybe He knows I need to hear it more than once before it finally sinks in. Either way, He’s been getting my attention because He is doing it again.

First He told us,

“Look. Watch. Listen. Pray. Discern.”

Then He said,

“Observe. Listen. Watch. Wait.”

He reminded us not to be so quick to judge, but to take every thought captive before allowing it to shape how we see someone else. Yesterday, He encouraged us not to spend our lives worrying about tomorrow, but to notice His presence today.

Now He seems to bring all of those lessons together with one simple Gem of Knowledge:

“Stop. Look. Listen. It’s not just for crossing the road. It’s for everything. Apply it regularly, daily, and see how things change.”

Im sure everyone has been taught the concept of Stop, Look both ways, and Listen for cars before crossing the street. It’s been repeated so often that now it comes automatically, right?

But how often do we do the exact opposite in life?

We react before we understand. We speak before we listen. We make plans before we pray. We worry before we trust. We judge before we know the whole story. We rush into decisions because we feel like something has to be done right now.

But what if stopping first would change everything?

Today’s reading gives us two striking examples.

When King Hezekiah learned that Sennacherib was coming to attack Jerusalem, he didn’t panic. He didn’t surrender to fear, nor did he recklessly charge into battle. He stopped. He sought wise counsel, strengthened the city’s defenses, encouraged the people, and most importantly, trusted the Lord. God delivered Judah in a way no human strategy ever could.

Then we read about Manasseh—a king who ignored every warning God gave him. He rushed headlong into idolatry, pride, and rebellion until he found himself carried away in chains to Babylon. Only when he was humbled did he finally stop long enough to seek the Lord. Scripture then tells us God listened to his prayer and restored him.

Two kings.

Two very different paths.

One paused to trust God before the crisis overwhelmed him.

The other dove in head first, got in trouble, and waited until the consequences overwhelmed him before turning back.

How much heartache might we avoid if we stopped sooner?

Paul echoes this same wisdom in Romans 15. As he greets friend after friend, we see that the Christian life was never meant to be lived in isolation. It is built on relationships, encouragement, and serving one another. Those things don’t happen well when we’re rushing through life. They require us to slow down enough to notice people, appreciate them, and encourage them.

Even Proverbs reminds us, “Plans succeed through good counsel; don’t go to war without wise advice.” (Proverbs 20:18, NLT)

That sounds remarkably similar to what the Lord has been teaching us all week.

Stop.

Before reacting.

Look.

What is really happening?

Listen.

What is God saying? What are others saying? What might you be missing?

Then move forward—not driven by fear, emotion, assumption, or pressure—but by wisdom.

Maybe that’s why the Lord keeps repeating Himself. Not because He’s saying something new… But because He’s inviting us to build a new habit for success. One that could change our relationships, our decisions, our conversations, our prayers, and our peace.

It really isn’t just for crossing the road.

It’s for life.💎

Action (5 Minutes with God)

Take at least 5 minutes to be with the Lord today. Ask Him:

• “Lord, what do You want me to know about this personally?”
  • Journal what He gives you through His Holy Spirit.
• Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
  • Journal what He reveals – then do it!

Before making an important decision or responding to a difficult situation today, intentionally practice this simple rhythm: Stop. Look. Listen. Pray. Discern.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for patiently teaching me the same lessons in different ways until they take root in my heart. Forgive me for the times I’ve rushed ahead without seeking You. Help me develop the habit of stopping before reacting, looking before assuming, listening before speaking, and praying before deciding. Give me wisdom to recognize Your voice above my own emotions and the noise around me. Teach me to walk through each day at Your pace, trusting that Your way is always better than my hurry. In Jesus’ name, amen.
