Today’s One Year Bible Verses: 1 Samuel 26:1–28:25, John 11:1–54, Psalm 117:1–2, Proverbs 15:22–23
Jesus Is Your Daily Breath
So many people spend their lives trying to pour from an empty place.
They carry everyone else’s burdens, constantly give emotionally and spiritually, try to rescue others, solve problems, encourage people, meet needs, and hold everything together — all while quietly suffering as they neglect their own soul.
Eventually exhaustion begins to surface.
Frustration grows.
Peace fades.
Discouragement settles in.
And sometimes the reason is not because they do not love God…
but because they have stopped resting in Him personally.
Today’s Gem of Knowledge addresses this,
“Take care of yourself before you try to help others. I am your oxygen mask. Put me on every day and I will save you. Then you can help others.”
What a powerful picture.
When flight attendants explain airplane safety procedures, they always instruct passengers to put on their own oxygen mask first before helping others. Why? Because someone who cannot breathe properly will eventually become unable to help anyone else around them.
Spiritually, many believers try to minister, lead, encourage, teach, parent, serve, and carry others without first remaining connected to the true source of life themselves.
But Jesus never intended us to live disconnected from Him while attempting to help others in our own strength.
In John 11, we see Jesus approaching the death of Lazarus. What stands out to me is that Jesus was never rushed, frantic, panicked, or emotionally led by pressure. Even while surrounded by grief, confusion, and urgency, Jesus remained deeply anchored in the Father.
That kind of steadiness only comes from abiding relationship.
Jesus regularly withdrew to pray, rest, and commune with the Father because He understood something we often forget: ministry without connection eventually leads to depletion…our lamps simply burn out.
And if Jesus Himself prioritized remaining connected to the Father, how much more do we need to?
Sometimes we think we are too busy to spend time with the Lord, but the truth is, we must. He is the source of our oil that keeps our lamps burning. He is asking us to remain healthy enough spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically by continuously walking faithfully with Him.
Even David’s story in today’s reading reveals what exhaustion and fear can do to a person. By the time we reach 1 Samuel 27–28, David is weary. Saul is unraveling. Fear, confusion, desperation, and spiritual instability are everywhere. Saul becomes so disconnected from God that he seeks counsel from darkness itself because he no longer knows how to hear the Lord clearly.
That is such a sobering picture of what happens when people drift from intimacy with God.
The Lord is not merely meant to be part of our emergency plan.
He is our emergency plan!
He is our daily breath…our oxygen.
Psalm 117 reminds us simply:
“For his unfailing love for us is powerful; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever.” (NLT)
His love sustains us.
His presence restores us.
His voice steadies us.
And Proverbs 15:22 says:
“Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.” (NLT)
Healthy support matters too. God never designed us to carry life alone. Sometimes our mask slips or the hose gets kinked, and we need others to help us breathe again too. You never know when you will need encouragement, prayer, wisdom, or someone to help carry you through.
Sometimes “putting on the oxygen mask” looks like slowing down long enough to pray, rest, worship, seek wise counsel, set healthy boundaries, process emotions honestly, or simply spend quiet time with the Lord before trying to pour into everyone else.
You cannot continually give out what you are not receiving.
The healthiest people are not the ones pretending to be endlessly strong.
They are the ones who stay continually connected to the true source of strength.
Jesus is not asking you to save everyone in your own power.
He is asking you to stay close enough to Him that His life continues flowing through yours.
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Spend intentional time with the Lord today, even if it’s just 5 minutes. Ask Him:
- “Lord, what do You want me to know about this today?”
- Journal what He gives you by His Holy Spirit.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Journal what He gives you – then do it!
Before immediately focusing on responsibilities, social media, ministry, work, or helping others put on your oxygen mask by spending time with the Lord. Do not keep trying to give from an empty well. Invite God to restore the areas where you have become spiritually depleted or emotionally overwhelmed – let Him fill you today!
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my source of life, peace, strength, and rest. Forgive me for the times I try to carry everything in my own strength while neglecting intimacy with You. Teach me to remain connected to You daily so I can live from overflow instead of exhaustion. Help me care for my soul, my mind, my heart, and my spirit with wisdom and balance. Restore the places in me that feel weary or depleted, and remind me that You never asked me to save others apart from You. Help me stay close to Your voice and Your presence so Your life may continually flow through mine. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
