Today’s One Year Bible Verses: 1 Samuel 8:1–9:27, John 6:22–42, Psalm 106:32–48, Proverbs 14:34–35
A Work in Progress
It’s easy to go through life on autopilot—doing what’s expected, following what feels familiar, and never really stopping to ask why we’re here.
We get into routines. We follow patterns. We do what everyone else is doing.
And before we know it, we’re living… but not truly living with purpose.
But God calls us higher than that.
He reminds us in today’s Gem of Knowledge:
“Don’t take for granted the life I give you. Try to find out what I have designed for you so you can make the very best of it and fulfill the full measure of your creation.”
You weren’t created randomly.
You were designed intentionally.
In 1 Samuel, we see the danger of drifting into what’s familiar instead of seeking what’s from God. The people looked around at other nations and decided they wanted the same thing—a king. Not because God told them to, but because it felt normal.
“Look,” they told Samuel, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have” (1 Samuel 8:5, NLT).
They traded God’s leadership for something that looked more comfortable, more predictable, more like everyone else.
And even when warned, they insisted: “We still want a king… We want to be like the nations around us” (1 Samuel 8:19–20, NLT).
That’s the pull we still face today.
To fit in.
To follow what’s familiar.
To choose what feels safe over what is purposeful.
But God’s design for you was never meant to look like everyone else’s.
In John 6, we see another layer of this. The people were following Jesus—but for the wrong reason. They were focused on what He could give them physically, not who He was spiritually. Jesus tells them, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs” (John 6:26, NLT).
They were settling for provision… when He was offering transformation.
And we can do the same—settling for what meets our immediate needs instead of pursuing the deeper purpose He has for us.
Psalm 106 reminds us how easily people drift from God’s best: “Again and again he rescued them, but they chose to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed by their sin” (Psalm 106:43, NLT). God kept reaching, but they kept choosing what was easier instead of what was right.
But that doesn’t have to be your story.
Proverbs brings it back to truth: “Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34, NLT). Living in alignment with God’s design isn’t just better—it’s what brings life, purpose, and lasting impact.
There is more for you.
A design.
A calling.
A reason you are here.
Don’t settle for just existing when you were created to fulfill something eternal.
Ask Him. Seek Him. Follow Him.
And step into the life He designed—on purpose. 💎
Action (5 Minutes with God)
Take 5 minutes to be with be with the Master today. Ask Him:
- “Lord, What do You want me to know about this today personally?”
- Write down what He reveals to you.
- Then ask, “What do You want me to do?”
- Write down what He reveals – then do it!
Ask God to reveal more of your purpose. Be willing to follow where He leads, even if it’s unfamiliar.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for creating me with intention and purpose. Thank You for thoughtfully knitting me together. Help me not take this life for granted. Help me to see the beauty you placed in me and love myself better. Show me what You’ve designed for me and give me the courage to walk in it. Show me what I should dream for, so I can work towards it with You every day. Let it all be for Your glory. In Your name I pray, Jesus. Amen.
